Angry My Song Book attacked

Sign in to disble this ad
it seems that the people that where against mxtabs etc have now struck My Song Book, which supplies people guitar Pro 4 tab files for free. I went on today and found it said something about authors and copyright. Anyone else notice this, www.mysongbook.com

"Providing some tabs - even made by ear - of copyrighted music is illegal. In order to respect the law, downloads have been limited to the [Composition] and [Competition] files. We are going to make our best to find a solution to offer music content without infringing copyrights."

I find that to be total BS. How greedy can artists get? I don't download Guitar Pro files and put them on my iPod instead of buying the cd. It's a glorified MIDI file for crying out loud. It just shows what notes the artist of the file thinks are being played. What are artists losing by allowing people to tab out their songs? The negligible percentage amount of money they'd make from someone buying the tab book? Guess what. At the end of the day, Lars Ulrich will still be able to afford a Carrera GT. I find Guitar Pro to be a great tool for learning songs, as you can hear what's being played in real time. Granted some are way off, but it's easy to distinguish which are good and which suck. But why take that from people? For all the free **** and breaks artists get (can you say Vince Neil?), you'd think they'd kick something back to the fans, you know, the people that got them to where they are and be grateful that people actually want to emulate them. But no. They stick it to us anyway they can. But it's good to know that some artists aren't like this. Hell, Foo Fighters have a "Tabs" link on their website for their fans which makes me like them even more.

Rant over.

Well, it's usually not the artists. It's Usually the RIAA or the record company.

I agree, but the artists do have a say in how far it goes. Like I said, Foo Fighters have a link for Tabs on their offical website. They're on a major label, but if they didn't have a say, there would be no Tabs link. Yes they are a big band and probably hold more sway than other artists. But what about bands like Metallica that are even bigger? From what we've seen in the past, they'd probably try to sue some guy on the street playing Nothing Else Matters on his acoustic guitar. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Lars walked up to the guy with a court summons and dropped it the guy's guitar case. Then grabbed a fist full of nickles before leaving.

Yes I am a musician, no it isn't my livelihood, but does that matter? It's a tab. It doesn't hurt record sales. It doesn't hurt concert attendance. The only thing it could possibly hurt is the sale of sheet music, which I'm sure is not that big of a percentage of what the band and record company brings in. And what's worse, sometimes those transcription books aren't even accurate. So I should pay $15-$20 for some company's transcription of a song that could quite possibly be less accurate than one I find online for free?

What's next? Do we sue cover/tribute bands? Do we charge some 13 year old kid in his basement $5.00 for trying to hammer out Enter Sandman? How f***ing greedy can you get? Where does it end?

I still find the whole situation ridiculous. Surely you only need tabs for music you already own, regardless of whether or not your procured it legally or illegally. How tight are these record companies?

How much say the artist has in it probably varies quite a bit. Not everyone has the kind of clout that Dave Grohl carries.

It's also worth noting that "no tab" is probably a default, and that it's only allowed if the artists specifically lobby with their record company to have them released. I get the impression that there are bigger fish to fry for your average major label artist than getting the "no tab" portion of their contract annulled.

Angry I am so pissed right now!

GP is a great tool for me and everyone in my band, hell its so popular people get couraged by it and start new bands in Turkey.GP courages 15-16 year old boys&girls to start bands man,I know from my brother.Without the GP he wouldn't be able to learn the songs so easy. The same for my band,we're busy people and have no time to learn by ear,but we do OK you know...
For God's sake you are musicians people, how the hell can you let something like that happen,no one got balls for speaking out for things like that, they speak only for their money.

Being a die-hard Metallica fan,I shall piss on Lars Ulrich's thunder-mega olimpic swimming pool made by the money he "WINS" with all this kinda stuff.

Totally BS,music is not what it is supposed to be many times,ıts becoming "only" an Industry,so sad,so sad...

couldn't you make an arguement that tablature falls under fair use?

i'm not a copyright lawyer, but I really don't understand how an incorrect bass tab qualifies as copyright infrigement

When I bought GP, I was given the opportunity to download almost the entire library. Did anybody actually do that?

yup. sorry to see mysongbook apparently going away - PowerTabs has been "gone" for what..6 months now?

I fear for 911tabs. I would hate to lose these sites -- they really help me with tricky bass tabs.

No, it's the publishing company. Which, generally these days, is owned by the artist. There are some bands that are so desperate to get signed and are so stupid about how to actually make money that they sign away publishing rights to a publishing company owned by teh label. But not too much anymore, most folks have wised up considerably.
