a fairly accurate version is in the 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' book... and dozens of other great lines

it's one of those Talkbass cliches that 'every bass player ought to have that book', but it's one of the truer cliches you'll find round here

+1 on the "Standing In The Shadows" book, it also comes with CDs of every transcription -- Pino Palladino plays "For Once In My Life", and it's my favorite bass line in the entire book.

BUT you should be aware that it's just the bass clef -- there's no tab.

On YouTube you can find videos of bassists playing the song -- I found those to be helpful too.

I have this...

I haven't tried learning that one yet though. It's pretty cool cause the CD let's you know how it's suppose to be played. Helps if you can't read music that well. I'll see if I can scan the pages for you this evening after work.

Guess I'm late to this discussion, I just stumbled across this site looking for the song "For Once in My Life" and thought I'd register. I'm not the best at reading music either, but if you have Standing in the Shadows of Motown, and a copy of the song (you can also use the CD in the set), play it and just read the sheet music as you listen to the song. There is also a set of scales Jamerson used which are in the flats he mostly played. I've been practicing a few hours a week when time allows and my reading has improved. I try not to use tabs because #1 learning by ear gives you the feel for a song, and #2 using tabs one can get to reliant on reading the numbers instead of actual music.
