Question "seven minutes of funk"!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
ok, i've been searching for this bass tab everywhere and have had no success! this song is called "seven minutes of funk", performed by The Whole Darn Family.
its a great bass line with some type of wah or filter effect on it.
this funky bass line is sampled by a bunch of rap songs, like jay-z's "aint no ni**a", tha alkaholiks "only when i'm drunk", and an old EPMD song which i can't recall the name of off the top of my head. if anybody knows this song, how to play it, or where i can find a tab for that bass line, please let me know!!! thanks alot!!

hrm. come on man, you don't need the tab!

Sounds like that main line starts in G (E string 3rd fret) then up to C(A string 3rd fret)

so,E 3 A 3 5 6 6 6 5 3 3 3 5 6 6 5 6 5 3 on the A string.

There is some walking up from the open E string and a couple of random fills

Eh, hope you can understand my transcription. I don't do this sort of thing.

You know what. That sucks. Sorry. I'm just trying to demonstrate the notes. I wouldn't know how to show you where to ghost or mute, it's kind of just something you feel.

I'm no teacher, but I honestly wouldn't rely on tabs. If you just listen to the song you can figure this stuff out. That entire bass line is based on that main riff. The rest is either walking up to it or playing a little outside, but nothing spectacular that you wouldn't be able to hear. Once you have the notes, just play it funky like that.

I'm not helping am I.

no, that should help. i can get a feel for the line, but i wanted to make sure i was doing it right. the effect on that is pretty cool? is that just a wah, or a filter? thanks though, i'll give it a try when i get home.

yeah, it'll get you started anyway. I just listened to it and it sounds like they might migrate down to Bb for the chorus every once in a while(1st fret on the A or 6th on the E, whatever. i think the A string would be easier).

I was hoping an actual music instructor might chime in here, but I guess they don't peruse the tab forums much.

Don't tak anything I tell you as gospel. An entire volume of encyclopedias could be written on what I don't know about music.

Sounds like some kind of flange to me. But I really shouldn't say.
