Sheet music: Any grooves ,or songs in 9/8,7/8, or 5/8 that you guys might have?

I need to practice on these time signatures, so any groove samples ,or piece of sheet music might help. Everything I see is in 4/4/,3,4, and 2/4.

Don't have the sheet music, but I'd suggest to check out some songs from Sting's repertoire:

- Seven Days - (5/4)
- Saint Augustine in Hell, I Was Brought To My Senses (after the intro), Love Is Stronger Than Justice (verse) - (7/8)
- I Hung My Head, Big Lie Small World - (9/8)

I would also look at some tool, just a rough list from the top of my head:

Vicarious - (5/4)
Lateralus - (alternates 9/8 - 8/8 - 7/8 - 8/8)

Dream Theater also uses odd time signatures a lot.

+100000000000 for DT

They use at least 4 different time signatures in all of their songs, plus they often change from measure to measure. Ex: 7/8, 4/4, 7/8, 4/4 and so on. Sometimes they even "invent their own time signatures like 15/32 - saw on GP Tab. Anyway all of their songs are really good practice.

As far as DT goes, being the rabid fan I am, I can help you with that.

The main riff at the beginning of 'Erotomania', is 9/8.

'Metropolis, Pt. 1' has TONS of odd time signatures in the instrumental section.

The entire beginning of 'Learning To Live' is in 15/8; GREAT groove. Great bassline too.

The instrumental part of 'Sacrificed Sons' has a great 15/16 groove (slow tempo of course), and a few 19/16 tags. Sounds good.

'Beyond This Life' has a good 5/4 groove. The intro riff. Pretty metal.

'The Dance Of Eternity' has, believe it or not, 109 time signature changes within the song. Not 109 different time signatures, but changes. In reality it does seem like they have 109 different ones; they go from 4/4 to 17/16 to 5/4 with a 7/8 polyrhythm backbeat and one part has 7/8 over 4/4, 5/8 with alternating 3+2 and 2+3, 11/4 with 16th note hemiolas (1 e & a, e & a 3, a & 4 e, for 4 measures. Sounds cool.), uhh just a bunch of alternating 7/8 and 5/8 riffs over a 12/8 drum pattern. Most complex song I know. If you wanna get technical, learn this one.

Forsaken has an AWESOME 7/8 groove in the second verse (or, first verse too).

'As I Am' has a 7/8 chorus.

Stream of Consciousness has a killer 'theme/main' riff..5/8 with 5/4 feel in the drums.

Hope I helped. I really recommend 'The Dance Of Eternity' though.

The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" has some 7/8 in it but it is not a sustained 7/8 so maybe it isn't what you're looking for.

The same is true for the Beatles' "Savoy Truffle." It has some 7/8 but the time signature jumps around.

Both tunes were George Harrison's work. I guess he liked to mix it up.

Check also out Pat Metheny's "As it is" from the "Speaking of Now" album. The chorus changes time signature in every bar:

bar 1: 6/4
bar 2: 5/4
bar 3: 4/4
bar 4: 3/4
bar 5: 2/4
bar 6: 4/4

At least that is how I hear it. You can count it in 4 the whole way as well but I think it's easier to think of the song like above.

These Toto songs use some odd time signatures as well:
- Jake to the bone
- Dave's gone skiing
- Better world

That's more rock/fusion if that's your genre.

A great place to start is Dave Brubeck's Take Five album. Every song on the record is in an odd time, but nothing feels forced or disjointed. Then you could also get into the Rush catalog, which features all sorts of time signatures.

Another one in 7/8 is March Of The Pigs by Nine Inch Nails.
