So I was looking at a tab for penny lane...

And while reading the tab to the music, I noticed that the tab didn't show a low "D" like he plays in parts of the song.

I'm wondering, is he playing that song in Drop D or am I hearing things? I'm sure I hear a low D rumbling, I'm sure it has to be bass. Anyone else know? I'm at school so I can't look for the exact point right this minute.

It's possible. I can't say for sure though. But it's not surprising TABs are either wrong or incomplete. It's rare to find a TAB that is actually 100% correct (at least in my experience anyway). I checked in The Beatles: The Complete Scores and it doesn't mention anything about drop D tuning, however.

Something like that can be heard between 1:32 - 1:34 and 2:23 - 2:25, but that's not the bassline, for sure. After listening through the headphones, I'd dare to say it's the lowest D from a piano playing a whole note in both places. I've just listened the whole song and didn't hear a single occurrence of a low D from the bass guitar.

And there you have it. Take his word for it, Alvaro knows about such things.
