Theme songs and stuff are great to entertain/impress people. Check out some of Stu Hamm's stuff, such as his version of the Star Trek theme or Linus & Lucy (the Peanuts theme). He does some great performances of Bach and other classical songs too if you're into that.

Buckethead does some covers of Disney songs which are pretty interesting

Tool - The Grudge (from the Lateralus album)

G|----------------------
D|----------------------
A|-3-----5------0-0-----
D|---5p0---3p0--0-0-----

You'll have to hear it to get the feel for it (it's strange). I believe it's about 4 or 5 minutes into the song (not really sure), during a point at which it cuts to a really jammin' beat and Maynard sings "Confining, defining, and we're sinking deeper." Anyway, it's a short, sweet, and akward riff that might be perfect for what you're looking for.

And let us hear whatever you put together as a thanks for giving you ideas.

Mini riffs? Are those riffs small enough to play on a mandolin?

To play a low D - That tuning is usually referred to as "drop D" (all strings tuned standard, just the 4th string is detuned 1 full step, or "dropped" to D) If you have a five string you can play that same thing in standard tuning.
