Let me ask something. Why is there only a tab forum for bass guitarists, as if it is common for us to not be able to read? I've been looking for the structural bases for certain bass performances in jazz, and yet all I find is a question about tablature for Ron Carter. In jazz? Tab?! While improvisation is a requisite in jazz, many bass lines have a basic motif that's sometimes clearly discernible, especially in ballads like Ron Carter in "Nefertit". At that tempo you can more easily hear not only the changes and motif but also cool technical tidbits like the way a player arpeggiates in and out of that change. I'm just frustrated that there are no forums for bg players who either know how to transcribe bg music (jazz or otherwise) or who are looking to learn the basic structure in bg parts. We've gotta run on over to the db forums? |

I've suggested the Tab forum should be renamed to 'Tab & Notation' or even the catch-all name 'Transcription', but it's still 'Tablature'
if you're interested in discussing transcription/notation/analysis/harmony, there are people here who'd be interested in that kind of thing... try the General Instruction forum or start your own thread in Tablature... I've only ever posted links to notation (I don't care for tab either) in the Tab forum and never got any complaints

| | | | If you're a relatively knowledeable musician with a real question like "Does anyone have a transcription of Ron Carter's bassline in Nefertitti", I don't think the guys on the DB side would mind you posting it. Be prepared for a few good-natured cracks about "slab" and "toy-bass" though.
By the way, is Ron Carter playing electric on that? |

Not always so good-natured, I'm sorry to say.
That said, do try the doubbass forum. Some knowledgable guys over there (yes, here too -- please! I don't want to start a brawl-- but DB has a stronger association with jazz) |

| I've been here 7-8 years and it is always good-natured on the part of the regulars - the only problem is when a new person doesn't get the sense of humour and feel that their "feathers have been ruffled....

Tab is so innacurate it can't be viewed as infringing this!!
