I feel old for even asking but does anyone have the tab for Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music"? |

| | | | I would hope so...'sfunny, almost every TAB out there loves keeping everything within the 1st 3 frets.
Obviously, the Wild Cherry tune's "main riff" is played higher up the neck than that TAB link.
Professional TAB-meisters are able to put the note where it was actually played. A prime example is "Badge"...awhile ago, here, someone asked why the TAB for "Badge" had position shifts (the opening bass figure can be played in position without shifts). Listening to the tune, you can hear Bruce playing the opening figure on the E & A strings (rather than the E, A, & D strings).

| | | Instructional Video, too Don't feel old - that's a great song, I don't care how old you are. I don't like it personally, but I haven't seen a crowd yet that doesn't react to it, and I'm trying to learn funk, and that's a great song to play with.
Together with the Bassmasta link, above, there's a good instructional video at http://www.blisteringbass.com/funk.php. I'm not sure if it'll be useful to you, but it helped me 'find the feel' of the song.
Have fun!!!! |

This song is easy but hard, and really fun! I love how complicated runs (the middle bass/horn breakdown) SEEM hard when you just hear the song, but are actually really basic.

This tune has been discussed a lot here...much of it centers around how it is always played "incorrectly". The bass is not as busy as some would play it. Trust me, I have done my share of adding too much...I had a chance to play this tune recently (after about a 20 year break). I played it "like the record" & it felt better, IMO.
Also, at the beginning of the pentatonic run, the 1st note is sometimes a matter of confusion...everybody plays an "E" as the 1st note, right? Someone here mentioned that the 1st note is something else... (Try a "B" as the 1st note)

G----------7----7-------|------------------- |------
D------9-----9-----9-7- |-/9----7---7-5-----|------
A-----------------------|---------------7-5-|7\----
E-----------------------|-------------------|------
I've played it this way for over a decade now. As many times as I've listened to the song, I think it is correct. But, I think an E can be substituted for that first B and no one would really think it was wrong.

There's definitely the G in there but I'm not sure around that. I don't think I have a copy of the original kicking around right now unfortunately... Hrm.
