Tabs using note names instead of fret numbers

Sign in to disble this ad
I've really been trying to learn all of the notes on the fretboard lately. So when I have been learning a song using tabs, I've made sure I know what actual note I'm hitting instead of just the fret number. Then it hit me, wouldn't it just make sense to put the note name on the tab instead of the fret number? For example, here's the first part of "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5:

G|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------D#-F------------------D-D#-E-F------------ ------|
E|G#-----A#-C-------C#-----A#-C-C#-------------C-C#--G#----|

For me, I really think this way helps me learn the song way better than regular tabs.
I like it, so I'm going to keep doing it this way, but does anyone else use this method? Do you think this is more productive than just learning the fret number?

IF you're going to do this why don't you just learn to read - then you'll get the pitch and the rhythm all in one hit?

Seems to me like your just putting roller skates on a crutch. You're so close as it is, you might as well go all the way and write it out in proper notation.

haha, I know. I am in the process of learning to read, but not quite there yet. I just wanted to jam out to some Jackson 5, and in a way that actually helped me learn the board.

Nothing wrong with tabs (well... I am not a fan...) - and if you have a new spin on them that works for you, more power to ya.

I'm just saying that you're modification is really not all that far off from simply writing the actual notes. The benefit you get from real notation is that you can also include rhythmic and expression details. It may be slow at first to do it that way, but like anything if you practice it, it will get easier and the end results are that much more valuable to you especially if you want to move on as a pro.

You're not the only one to think of it. Big fan of studybass.com - the section on reading standard notation may help you in your quest.

I love StudyBass.com It has really helped me
I havn't seen that lesson you just showed me though. He's even got a name for it, Alpha Tab.
There is also a "bass clef note quiz" that I have been using and its helped so much.
