tabs - why so funky sometimes?

boy I tell ya .. some people don't know standard chord progressions.

I'm still kind of a noob on bass but learning my scales and chord progressions by using 3 strings and 4 frets like yer sposed too.

After doing a lot of practicing with various combinations in scales last night I decided to learn Interstate Love Song by STP .. by ear. It took me about 10 minutes to get the intro of the song down .. three changes in chords - and all the fills can be done without changing positions ..

I just looked up the tab on fretplay.com and man .. way out of whack way to play it.

Look at the way the first start of the intro:

G:---------------------------|-------------------------|
D:---------------------------|--------------------6----|
A:--4---4-----4---4----2-4-6-|-7---7------7-----7---7--|
E:---------------------------|--------0-------7--------|

G:-----------------------------|----------------------------------|
D:-----------------------------|----------------6---6-----6-6-----|
A:-----------------------------|------------3-6---------6-----6---|
E:-5---5------5---5---0-5---7--|--4---4---4---------------------4-|

G:-------------------------|--------------------||
D:-------------------------|--------------------||
A:-------------------4-7---|--------------------||
E:-5---5---5-----0-5-------|-0------------------||

G:--------------------------------------|------------------------------|
D:--------------------------------------|------------------------------|
A:---4b(1/2)--4-----2-2---------------7-|------------------------------|
E:------------------------5-5-0-4-5-7---|-0----4-/-7---0---4--5--6--7--|

End Groove #1
G:-------------------------------|||
D:-------------------------------|||
A:-----------7-7-----7---7-6-----|||
E:-0-----4---------7---------7---|||

I tabbed it out like so by ear:

G:---------------------------|-------------------------|
D:---------------------------|--------------------6----|
A:-------------------------6-|-7---7------7-----7---9-7|
E:--9---9-----9---9----7-9---|--------0-------7--------|

G:-----------------------------|----------------------------------|
D:-----------------------------|----------------6---6-----6-6-----|
A:-----------------------------|------------3-6---------6-----6---|
E:-5---5------5---5---0-5---7--|--4---4---4---------------------4-|

G:-------------------------|--------------------||
D:-------------------------|--------------------||
A:-------------------4-7---|--------------------||
E:-5---5---5-----0-5-------|-0------------------||

G:--------------------------------|------------------------------|
D:--------------------------------|-------2---2--------2---------|
A:---4--3-----------------------5-|-----3---3--------3---3-------|
E:------------5-3---------2-4-5---|-0-4----------0-4-------------|

making use of scales I was able to do this in about 10 minutes.

I find this problem on a lot of songs .. run up the strings instead of using 3 string scales ..

<< not gonna be using tabs much anymore unless i can't figure out the line myself .. lol.
