"There was a Time" James Brown
I believe this song was 'created' live on stage, and I don't know if there is an actual proper studio take of the song. Even the original 45rpm single release sounds like a weird board mix from a live show.
None of this would be a problem, except for two things:
1. unlike most other James Brown songs, the bass is mixed very low on the great majority of the versions (all live) that I have heard.
2. no two JB bass players approached the song the same way.
This results in a song where you can't hear the bass, but when you do catch a snippet, it sounds nothing like the bit you were able to hear on any other version.
Its already a crime that this song was not included in the "Funkmasters, the James Brown Rhythm Sections" book. I can't get the song outta my head but I'm stuck trying to come up with a suitable bass line to play. Has anyone figured out the correct line for this tune?
