All the tabs I've ever seen were wrong, dammit! Here is my version...
G||4-------------------------------||
D||2-----------3h5---5-----5-----0-||
A||--------------------------------||
E||----0-3-x-x-----5---5-4---3-0---||
---1---+---2---+---3---+---4---+---
(count)
The 3rd G on the D string on beat 4 may not be correct, but I can't tell cause there's a snare hit right there, but it makes sense. |

G||4-----------------------------------||
D||4-----------3h5-----5-----5-----0--||
A||------------------------------------||
E||----0h3-x-x-----5-x---3-3----0-----||
That's just my rendition.I play with alot more mutes throughout the song. |

What I tabbed out in the last part of the measure were various notes I heard him play out of like a dozen times he played that riff through the 1st verse (not intro). I kind of loosely fret those notes and actually prefer the muted sound.
apart from the 1st strum (which is an 8th note), the rest are 16th notes (whether muted or played). I am pretty sure that the 3rd G on the D string comes on the snare hit on 4. And I'm pretty sure that the 2nd G on the D string comes right after a single 16th note after the hammer-on to the 1st G on the D string.
Whatever, it really doesn't matter. When you get those 16th note mutes moving at 120+ bpms, people are doing this: \m/\m/ |

I kind of revised my rendition. I prefer Geddy's hammer on to the G on the low E. Also, I changed the 5-4 to a 4-4 on the low E. Easier to not foobar when you're playing really fast, and those are mostly muted anyway. And the main thing about this riff is the percussive nature of it rather than the actual notes.
Except for the hammer ons, I strum the chord with the nail of my ring finger, slap with my thumb on the E string and pop with my ring on the D string.

Or am I crazy?

On Sailing...Cheese, he uses his 6 string fretless, but he doesn't use the low B. And he only uses the high C string/fret 4 (at least for the main riff) to play an E with the B on beat 1 (which is the same note as the E on the D string/2nd fret).
BTW, even though I got the notes right, I wasn't soundling like the recording until I figured out the key to making this riff sound right. Even though the majority of the riff is very percussive and muted, you HAVE to keep the 3 G's on the D string fretted and let them ring (well at least the 1st 2 G's). Listen close and you'll hear it. |

Later on in the song, Les doubles the chords making it

D||4-4----------3h5-----5-----5-----0--||
A||------------------------------------||
E||----0h3-x-x-----5-x---3-3----0-----||
There, you'd strum down with your middle, then pull back up. Kind of like a pick. |

Stanley Clarke can. IIRC, Les's live bass solo from Suck On This borrows heavily from Stanley Clarke's School Days era bass solos. Check out Stanley's Live 76-77 Album. Claypool has mentioned a big Stanley Clarke influence in early interviews. |
