For Whom The Bell Tolls Intro

I'm sure you're all familiar with this intro, but I have a problem. The strike of the G-string on the 19th fret after 17--16 on the D sounds out of place, and when I play along with the studio version, it seems to fit better without it, but every tab has it on there. How do you guys play it (provided that you play this song)?

That's how I play it too. It does sound a bit off, but I still prefer to play it that way.

I learned this song from the bass transcription book, and in my younger days, before spare cash, I played the song clean and found it sounded better without the pulloff as well.

Since getting my ME50B pedal, I've re-introduced the pull-off, it sounds sweet.

The two F#'s played simultaneously are actually notated in my book as "Bass 2" as well

I play it with the pulloff cause there is supposed to be a pulloff there...if you have cliff em all look at cliff play it live...he clearly does a pulloff after the little chromatic decent and he also does some hammer-on and pulloffs when he's on the a string near the end of the lick

Its right, you don't need to play the 2 2 2 2 0 part on the E again, focus on the intro

I do it with a bend on the 17th fret on the A string and then
a huge bend and vibrato on the 16th fret A string,
also I do include the pull off on the G.
Robert Truillio dosn't do the pull off live though, dosn't sound right either.

cause Robert Trujillo is an ape who can't physically pull off cause his bass is too low

He transforms into a crab whenever a serious riff comes up.

The Low E string notes at the end of the intro solo I think are for the second recorded bass to step in to play. The album has the bass playing with the guitars and holding the low F#'s and Cliff's second bass tone is doing the solo.

The sheet music should not be notated like it is.

It sounds better with the pulloff if you have an effect chain that sound similar to Cliff's setup. If you play it clean, it can sound somewhat strange. That's what I have noticed.

I've only been playing for about 3 weeks now but this is the first song I started to learn for two reasons. It was the first song I learned to play drums on and given the number of times I've heard because of that it I figured it would be the most natural for me to learn.

I hate sounding rude (especially being new to bass) but if it doesn't sound right with the pulloff it's probably a technique/timing issue. My band plays this song every once in a while just screwing around and my bass player also has an issue with this because he doesn't practice it. If you're having trouble with it just take it slow at first until you're comfortable with the progression, then play along to the album. It will sound better to you and you'll have a better sense of accomplishment.

Play the PO as a ghost note and you will get a better feel for it.
