I couldn't find a better place to post this, so here goes:
I can't figure out the pattern for the main riff, all I know is there's lots of muting, and it may or may not be slapped.

Anyway, is this the part you mean?

On my stringray bass, I have really nice low action and it's easy to play this bass line. I think it's hard to play this bass line if your action is high so you might want to consider that. |

almost... more like:
----------------------------
-----------------------0h2--
----------------0-0-h2------
-0-0-0-2-2-2-3-------------
rhythm is:
8-16-16 8-16-16 8-16-16tie16-16-16-16
use a medium heavy *nylon* pick, such as a jim dunlop USA nylon .73mm, and use either the side of the pick or the back. use a rickenbacker if you've got one! a slightly overdriven all-tube amp helps, or you can do a pretty good job with a nice overdrive pedal on conservative settings. boost the treble. |

G--------------------------------
D--------------------------------
A----------------------------5-7-
E-0--0-0-2--0-0-3--0-3h5h7------
the main thing to play that line right is smoothness - making all the notes sound clean so it sounds fluid.
BTW, from what I've heard about that song, Squire actually recorded it with a penny to get that clangy sound...
good luck eh |

Thats basically right, I have seen the music to it, although I think you play the fret 3 G two more times, so it should be like this
------------------------------
-------------------------0h2--
---------------------0h2------
-0-0-0-2-2-2-3-3-3-----------
Thats exactly what the music said

| | | Thanks for everyone's response to this, I think combining what you guys told me with the unnecessary amount of bass boost on my speakers is pointing me in the right direction.
It sounds like a 'Dug dugga-dug dugga-dug dugga dugga dugga' pattern (the first part having the same pattern as the opening to Heart's Baracuda).
I don't have a rickenbacker, I've got a Ibanez GSR200, but I've been playing it for 2 years and never had a problem getting the right sound out of it. It's got a crazy-low action, more so even than others of the same model, so I wonder if there was a mistake made somewhere along the line...
As for the definitive grinding sound, I've messed around in GarageBand and tweaked a couple effects to get moderately close.
I'm tossing between a Dunlop 3.0 Big Stubby (Love my stubbys ), a Fender Heavy, and even a penny, for a pick.

Thats exactly what the music said | That's wrong. The first tab mentioned is the correct one. Except he plays dead notes, sorta like this: Quote:
--------------------------
---------------------0-2--
-----------------0-2------
-0-X-X-2-X-X-3-0----------
| Hard to play well. His tone is incredible. |

I do not have my bass on my right now. I will take a whack at it from memory, but this is a whack whack...
After the initial phrase (as outlined in many previous posts) is repeated 3x's the phrase has a final turn that is something like this:
G------------------------------
D---------x0h2h0----------0---
A----------------2---2h0h2----
E--0--xx-2---------------------
Disclaimer: I am at work, air-bassing what I think I play... I am not sure of this, but the end of the phrase is something like what I tabbed. Forgive me for being so vague.
AND... I think - I am not sure about this, but I believe the keyboard is doubling the part which adds to the very unusual tone - at least it sounds that way on the album - like a clavicord setting played in the same register as the bass part.
This is definitely one of the most unique riffs in rock 'n' roll history and is very difficult to pull off perfectly achieving both rhythmic and tonal accuracy. There are a lot of components in play; bass, pick, amps, (effects chain), and I believe a keyboard part as well.
And finally - as my favorite band director used to say, "If you can't say it, you can't play it."
So try really hard to learn how to say (sing) the part over and over again. Once you get your head around it and can actaully 'say it', playing it becomes much more accessible.
