those guys on serous enough about their music for me to waste my time with them | I smoke before most practices with my band, and Im the one who remembers everything.

| | | | Actually I do talk about this now after being burned, having a couple of beers is fine with practice (in moderation) pot smoking in the practice area is 100% off limits. I discussed this before auditioning for my current band. |

OP, why didn't you just say something to them, then and there? It's quite likely they would have apologized for making you feel uncomfortable and put out their joints. You can't expect them to read your mind. As others have mentioned, they probably didn't think anything of it. You told them you didn't smoke, but you didn't tell them other people smoking makes you uncomfortable.
In other words, instead of posting on the internet, COMMUNICATE with them. |

Blue | That's a pretty hard line and could definitely be an opportunity limiting factor. Every one of the best bands I've been in had some at least occasional responsible and moderate use. I'm not saying this is a requirement, but that it is very common place and you are really tossing out some potentially incredible opportunities with this stance. Good luck with that.

But seriously... obviously no band is gonna say in an ad that they partake in illegal activity. It would have been in their best interests to ask you how you felt about it before they all lit up.
This can go both ways though. If you are coming into another band's situation, you need to be prepared to either accept what happens, come to agreements on what is appropriate, or not do the gig. A couple of the guys in a band i was in awhile back had an issue with, ummm "skiing".. I made it clear i didn't want to see it, or be around it, but they could do what they like on their own time. I'm nobody's parent. We made great music and toured. I had a great time and they respected me, as i did them.

As an old fart, I have NEVER been in a band that sounded better stoned or drunk than they did sober. For those of you who want to rub Hendrix, Aerosmith, Slash or any other drug induced humanoids in my face, whatever. You ain't them. They were (are?) EXTREMELY talented and somehow managed to pull it off (sometimes). Good luck with that. I personally haven't met anyone who could.
I have done my share of pot and enjoy my beer on the weekend, but not at practice or during a gig. After practice, I would have NO problem at all, but I don't think I could be in a band that had to get high (or drunk) to enjoy practice or gigging. I might put up with moderate use, but they'd better have the chops to back it up.
I take my music very seriously. It's my job (part time, anyway), my drug, my religion... my calling. Doing it at a party or informal jam is one thing. During rehearsal when it's WORK, doesn't work for me. I wouldn't show up for my day job drunk or stoned either.
Hey, if you're cool with it, that's your decision. I'm only speaking for myself because you asked for an opinion.

| | | | Oh brother, just when were they supposed to tell you? On the Craigslist posting? I think you are over-reacting. Please refer the previous post that asked if you would have felt the same way about them having a coffee, a shot of liquor, or a cigarette. If it's just the actual stuff they partook of, then it's your hang-up, not theirs.

It might not be right in the ads title (though sometimes it is), but Ive seen plenty of ads in the LA area asking that auditionees be 420 friendly (ok with others doing it if they dont partake themselves).

I mean, I drink plenty of beer, but I'd ask permission before peeing on your shoes.

| | | | I'm to the point now where I'd be surprised if no one DIDN'T light up at every rehearsal/jam/practice. Hasn't and probably never will bother me all that much. I don't smoke weed or drink but if other people do then it's fine with me. If anything I think it helps most drummers I've known keep a beat. (had to throw that in there) I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. I'm not an uptight, my way or the highway, control freak, perfectionist, respect hungry individual either. If you feel uncomfortable in that situation then I would say something, maybe jokingly at first but at least you could get the ball rolling in that direction. |
