Age Limit?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there an age limit for bassists to be out in public and gigging?
Does it depend on the music? Jazz and classical are unlimited?
Should the Stones and Co have given it away by now?

No.

As long as the music's good and everyone's having fun, who cares? It's not like you have to retire to a bungalow, wear cardigans and listen to Daniel O'Donnell when you hit 40.

Hell no. The older you are the better you become.
It's true for most musicians and even more for bass where focus and minimalism prevails over flashy moves.

If you're over 19, it has to be jazz or blues, the sort of thing nobody listens to.

Gee, I hope not. I just started playing bass in earnest this year. It started in the spring when I volunteered to play bass in an orchestra for my kids Jr High musical. I thought I would be given guitar chord chart over the songs or something but instead is was a thick spiral bound 200 page, 32 songs with only bass clef.

This was a Broadway musical. The signature song alone had 6 time signature changes and 4 key changes and was written with horns so everything is in a lot of flats.

I haven’t played music in 25 years and then that was primarily a rock guitarist. So now, I’m 48 years of age, completed hooked on bass and practice everyday. I’m currently seeking other musicians to play with.

I started at age 30 and now I'm 31. Of course I look like I'm 20, but who's counting?

I can only guess that you are just joking or trolling, because otherwise...NINETEEN, are you freaking kidding me? By that logic, virtually every artist on MTV today should just throw in the towel now. (Then again, considering what's on MTV, that might be ok).

Um...NO!!! I'm 43. They'll get my bass when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I guess it matters if your talking about minimum or maximum age limit. I'm 15 but look about 20 because of my build and the caveman beard i have goin right now, and i've been accepted in several band auditions untill they finally asked my real age, and upon telling them i got the ever popular "sorry kid, come back in a few years" Even worse in my case, I actually AM intested in playing jazz and blues and other "lame" music, and in this part of michigan, the only other people who want to play that are usually retired (not the best bandmates for someone not quite out of highschool)

Unless you audience has grey hair and wrinkles, too?

With my old bands (rock), we had a great mix of ages in our audience. But with this blues band, nearly everyone in the audience is over 40.

I miss my rock bands, man. A LOT!!!

"All bass players must stop playing and gigging at the age of 50 and turn themselves in for elimination. This is why a bass player's 50 birthday is also call "Lastday". The end of Lastday is marked by Infinite Solo."

Hmmmm....A bass players "Logans Run." Look man, **** what other people think. If you can breath, then play. Music transcends age, gender, and sex. If you're alive, you have something to say...

When you're 70, then you're "ripe."

a teenage male is "young, dumb and full of c_m."
Give me "Veterans" anyday. Usually, I can't learn **** from a kid...

As long as there is someone out there older than you that can play better than you, keep working at it.

Young pups that can jump around can always be hired. Good musicians are hard to find.

Heh. I was running an open mike a couple of years ago, and a freestylee rapper crew who could barely get in the bar legally came in. I let 'em carry on for quite a while, then volunteered to lay down some bass 'n drums with my buddy. Eventually I got on the mike and left 'em with their tails between their legs. I could've left with their girlfriends too if I wanted to. Geezers, represent.

So...I have just a little over six years, and then I must flee for The Wilderness Of The Old? OK...do they have electricity, or do I need to buy an acoustic before the young goons begin chasing me?

Hmmm...better buy one of those turbo-charged Hover-rounds...

The founder of Luna Guitars' mother plays bass. She started playing at 39. She is 81 now, and still playing. She's had a career playing bass all this time.

Then there's Carol Kaye. She is older now, too...in her 70's, I believe. Her back is all messed up, and a friend from Indiegrrls designed a super-light bass especially for her. She still plays.

If those ladies are not too old, well then, baby, neither am I. I fully intend to be playing in my nursing home's band when I'm an auld, auld Granny.
