Does anyone know what the general rule is for airlines and musical instruments is?? Will I have to make any special arrangments or preparation?

You might do a search on the Basses forum about this. ATA cases, carry-on (forget it right NOW!) and shipping it are discussed in detail. There is a lot of practical info there. The short answers are yes, and yes.

BTW, is this into the USA? If so, things are very complicated due to TSA rules and airline flight crew behaviors.

Not sure how it is now, but i did a bunch of traveling with a band several years ago. I just showed up at the airport with my bass and they took it as luggage... I was awful trusting.... then one time while sitting on the plane at our destination... I saw my custom pre-Gibson Tobias signature 5 fly through the air into a baggage cart... I about fell over. The next weekend I bought a modulus for the flying gigs... I dared them to break it

anyway leave your best bass at home... they can loose it, break it, etc.

+1

While changing planes in DFW, I saw one of the handlers literally throw my ATA case on the tarmack (which was actually concrete).

I forget which bass was in there, but it was not my Sadowsky, thank heavens. The bass was not damaged. The case sat there and sat there and sat there and sat there. All the handlers had left. I pointed it out to a Customer Service person, and they called someone. I started to worry that they would think it was a bomb, but a few minutes later, from my next plane window, I saw it picked up by the same guy that threw it on the concrete. A little while later, we took off. I didn't know if it got on the plane or not. When I got to Cinncinati, it was the last piece of baggage to hit the belt.
As I said, the bass was fine. Some of the Olive Drab paint was missing from the ball corners of the ATA case, but the hinge, latches, joints, etc. were all fine. I, however, was somewhat older after that day.

It was American Airlines.

PS The case was a ~35 lbs full ATA case with recessed hardware and form-fitting foam interior. Got it here:

The only advice I have is to pad the headstock regardless of everything else. I use a couple of towels. If the bass is completely stationary, it will likely not be hurt.

I've got one of these cases as well. Great case for the money. It made it from Minneapolis to Acapulco and back with no problems.

It's more money, but you might consider buying an extra seat for your bass. You'll get a few funny looks from the flight crew, but at least you know your bass will be safe.
