If I use the fact that my guitarist/keyboardist/composer/greatest musical gift to mankind has just started dating the girl I was (am) in love with as leverage to persuade him to play some music I may actually enjoy? Less Soilwork, more Saxon? Or is that just unfair exploitation of a situation?

You'll get your chance when Romeo ends up wasting away in rehab/prison and you swoop in to console(bang) her. But even though you profess your love for her, she goes back to the wasted bum.
Damn! That sucks. |

Also, you should look for a new band. Also, ask him politely to keep his private life with her private.

If someone came to you and said "You are an incredible musician and I am madly in love with your girlfriend. Now, lets get down to changing the format of the band to what I want" , you wouldn't immediately agree to whatever he suggested? Wow, you must be tough to work with.

I just don't see how you plan to do so. He's more than likely going to get peeved at you for mentioning it than be willing to change the band because you like his girlfriend.

Anyway, he knew about me having a thing for her long before he even became interested.
