We are an originals band for the most part, however we decided to add a few more covers to our set list.Hopefully this will allows to play some the clubs we have been trying to get into.

All band member are making recommendatios for covers and keep in mind we are supose to be recommending "crowd pleasers".

The songs from me are Day Tripper (The White Snake version), a hard rock dancable version of Neil Young's "Cinnammon Girl", Thin Lizzy "Jail Break" and I Love Rock and Roll".

Now remember I'm 56 and I feel these are crowd pleasers. Other menber are coming up with stuff like Face Down by some band call Jump Suit Apparatus. Is that a crowd pleaser, I have never heard of it. Just like some of the band has never heard Cinnamon Girl.

Jump Suit is popular among younger music listeners, but I guess what is key here is the the age demographic of the people in the clubs and bars you're wanting to play.
If you're playing for people in their 20-30's I don't know how well cinnamon girl and Day tripper would go over.
But even at that,I still think you could do those songs and a younger crowd really like them.
Just listen to some modern remakes to get an idea of how you may be able to change some of those songs up.
Type O Negative did an awesome remake of Cinnamon girl (imo),and I think they remade daytripper as well.

Face down by Red Jump Suit Apparatus would actually work pretty well.

A lot of it really is determined by the age of the crowd, the older crowds would probably like cinnamon girl, but a crowd of 20 yr olds would probably enjoy Face Down a bit more.

We play Face Down and Damn Regret by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Both go over well and they are easy to play.

Cool, I understand and I guess the age of the crowd could vary, but for the most part, under 30.

But how can anyone not like "Jail Break"?

Wow! And a techno dance breakdown.

How much more crap can you shove into one tune?

Just mind blowing.

There are a lot of people under 30 who dig classic rock.

There are a lot of people under 30 who do not dig classic rock and prefer more contemporary pop/rock.

You got me man.
That seems like one of those songs that trancends age.
I would still play that one for sure.

Dude...RJA is teenie-bopper Top 40 BS. Every girl I've ever known had them in their Ipod next to Fall Out Boy and the All-American Rejects. They all have their alright points but just because they are popular with people doesn't mean you should play them. That being said, I would never do covers of any of those bands...nor would I want to see covers of them. Keep you integrity - play Thin Lizzy. Their whole catalogue. Forever.

Picking some songs to cover isn't like picking a religion. Why do people make music a big philosophical conundrum?

I've played covers I didn't like. I've played originals I didn't much care for. It happens.

I second this.

Also, something to keep in mind, is that I think you'll have sucess if you match your music to your looks; as a young person myself, I'd much more enjoy seeing a band of middle-age plays KILL some classic rock standards/lost classics, rather than an awkward, "Is this what the kids listen to?" cover of a recent song. Although, I bet you could rock some Wolf Mother!

PS Obv the Crab-Core suggestion is a joke. Its just plain terrible, isn't it?

Hell yes. I'm 23 and as an example, a friend and I just saw Yes play last August right in my hometown. Most amazing concert I've ever seen. And those guys look like death. But my, if they didn't absolutely dominate the realm of musical and tonal bliss.
And yes, there are many bands you could pull off today that would hit it with all ages. Jet, Wolfmother, The Strokes, Black Crowes, Live, some John Mayer, Blues Traveler, My Morning Jacket, maybe even some Coheed and Cambria...to name a few. Not that this is a comprehensive list by any means..but its a diverse range of modern sound.

One band that I like that I think is pretty underrated is The Alternate Routes. Check out their site or whatever and take a listen. They have some good live southern-style rock, and mix it with good My Morning Jacket - style acoustic sounds.

I'm sure the Crab-Core was a joke. 100% sure.

What part of that comment made music a "religion" or "philosophical conundrum"? When I play covers, I try as best I can to avoid a sort of "sell-out" attitude. I will be the first in line to say you have to play for an audience, but there is a point where you have to stop and say: "am I even playing for me anymore?" And once you get to the point where there's no enthusiasm or heart for alot of the music you play...then it becomes not fun and essentially worthless. And that point comes faster when its generic music with little heart in itself to begin with.

I can see if the OP loves to play stuff like RJA, but I doubt if its on his "to-do" list.

They've never heard of Cinnamon Girl? Damn...I'd run as fast as I can. I'm down to play many genres with preferably people my age (early 20's), but if they have no depth in their discography to reach that far then I'm outta there. It sounds like this band is just a bunch of people who need other people to play with. Is that true?

I actually like the main riff at the start, it's kinda sweet.

these days dancability governs......and a lot of the csny is a decade older than the average thirty year old....you can definitely play the classic rock stuff, but you have to watch out for the parts that slow down or change tempo during the song ........things that work on record, and in concert do not necessarily translate in a club
