Definitely do it. Subbing is fun. Do a good job, and you've networked with some good players who will contact you in the future if they need a bass player.

Our guitar player started touring on and off with a fairly major act. We had another guy subbing. No committments. He did a good job, eventually the main guy was doing too many nights as a solo act when in town, could hardly make any of our gigs, couldn't make practices. And obvously couldn't make gigs when on tour. So we made the sub guy the main guy. Stepped in without missing a beat, didn't need to audition.

You'll put yourself in the #1 slot when/if they do decide to get rid of the bass player. Make sure you do a good job, and maybe they'll decide they like you better. Something's going on that they're thinking of replacing him. You can provide an easy alternative.
