Analysiing recordings of a for-fun cover band
For this side project playing Rush covers for parties and ourselves. tonight we are going to listen to a recording of last weeks rehearsal and throw darts at our drummer. At least that is his impression. I am hoping it does not go down like that so I'm open to suggestions. Our, ahem, other member of the trio is pushing him pretty hard. Whether he deserves it is another question. Six months into my recovery from 20 years of not playing regularly I am still not where I used to be - which is what this project was for , to see how good/bad I am/can be - so I don't have much room to talk. I want us to keep going once a week so at least I get to blast my amp! So I'm probably not going to be as forceful as perhaps I wish I would be. Everyone wants a killer drummer. Maybe more so since its Rush! Oh yeah. It's his rehearsal place, too. Probably keeping my mouth shut a lot tonight except to rein in the six-stringer, LOL/

I would focus on criticizing my own playing, and keep my mouth shut about either of the others

Great advice, and not just for this situation. Thanks

So the guitarist wants a drummer that can nail Rush tunes? A drummer good enough to nail Rush tunes probably isn't gonna want to play for free in some party/jam band. Unless you get really lucky...
If the guitarist starts critiquing the drummer, you will soon find yourself without a drummer.

If the goal of the listening session is to comment on the drummer, STOP IT NOW!
You can give some constructive tips, but pointing people on their errors rarely leads to improvments or a healthy cooperation...

Why make a big thing about sitting around listening to this if it's just for fun?

It went well as we didn't even listen to the recording. We had an acoustic jam with a metronome and there was much enlightenment on the way forward.
