Another 2 song audition!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an audition 8th November for a Blues/Rock act (lots more blues than rock too). Not exactly what I was after, but after over a year of trying to get into what I want with no luck I'll take anything I can get - for a good while at least, it's all experience and fun, right?

It's another short audition, with only 2 songs being asked of me:

Stevie Ray Vaughn - If The House Is Rocking.
T-Rex - I Love To Boogie.

Not quite what I prefer to play but the 2 songs are steadily growing on me, so it's not all bad. I've also find that with both these songs, there's a theory lesson involved, something I find lacks in a lot of the rock covers I've learned in the past, or at least at my level of theory!

Still not sure about this 2 audition thing, but its jamming live at least

Fun tunes! Just remember to ride the C for a few extra measures during the solo on If the House is a Rockin, and you'll do great!

Cheers.

I had a friend tell me when jamming with a lead guitarist AND a harp/harmonica player in a blues setting, prepare to ride a lot of changes while they wank away...oh, sorry, he said solo

The bassist from Double Trouble (tommy? or is he the drummer) writes great waling lines, not your average stuff from what I understand, even for blues.

FYI, the bassist from Double Trouble was Tommy Shannon (drummer was Chris Layton), and if you want to look like you know your stuff, the song is called "The House is Rockin," not "If The House is Rockin," and it's by Stevie Ray Vaughan, not Vaughn.

Remember not to come in until the 5th measure of "The House is Rockin," too... and it's not a straight I-IV-I-I-IV-IV-I-I-V-IV-I-V blues, it actually goes I-V-I in the beginning... just listen to the song & you'll get it.

Tommy Shannon is a tank of a bass player... solid, steady, no fluff, no muss, and there to let Stevie shine.

I don't know much about the other song so I'll leave it be.

Good luck!

Good point, thanks for the advice!

Yeah the I-V-I threw me a couple times when learning the song, but I got it down. I should probably learn the 12-bar inside out too, my theory is still shaky ... even on that!

Some Experience

Make sure you go into it with the attitude that this is what you want to do and be sure it shows; they'll sense it if you're luke warm. Better to wow them, then go home and decide if its right for you if you're still thinking about it. Also be prepared for them to ask you to join on the spot - again don't want to be luke warm. Nail down the opportunity as a first priority.
