Alcyon, thanks for the post, it is helpful.

HumbleRumble, I've been on that side and experienced the "panties in a bind" factor. That's the root of why I asked the question.

MusicElectronix - I meant a band that would never play in a church, because it wouldn't serve the purpose of what the church has a band for.

I know somebody here knows what I mean, maybe I even had it right the first time.

anyone who won't do a song because of a (GASP!!) "christian message" is a pea-wit.

I do songs all the time that have "messages" I don't personally agree with.

but the point of being in a band is to play songs that people listening to you will like or want to hear.

If you dissected the "message" of every song you covered, would you get very far?

Anyone cover a U2 song? Lots of christian messages in their music, especially the early days. This is from their bio.

""October" was a much more mellow and spiritual record that reflected the Christian beliefs of Bono, Edge and Larry."

How about songs that you don't agree with politically? I've done American Idiot and I don't agree at all with the simplistic messages in Green Day songs (let's face, most musicians are a fairly uneducated lot). How about the Clash? Lots of politics there. Or what about "Turning japanese"? It's about masturbation. Or "Don't Fear the Reaper"? Anyone here think that promoting suicide is a good thing? Or the MYRIAD pro-drug songs out there?

etc etc

It's just music folks. You're all overthinking it. If it's a good song, and you can do it well, you do it. Period

I agree QORC, Sometimes I don't even agree with the songs that I myself write. I just come up with a hook and like the sound of it and have to come up with some lyrics to back it. And as Humblerumble said...playing Christian music in a bar is easier to get away with than playing non-christian music in a church. I mean let's face it alot of Christians go to bars/clubs.
You may, however, want to watch out how many songs have religious intonations unless you want to be labeled that way.

Interesting thread this. I was in an all original band with a Jesus emphasis, and "Undo Me" was the ONLY cover we ever did.

As to your issue. If you're playing covers in a "secular" band, you're probably already playing music by folks from a miryad of religious backgrounds, (I'm pretty sure they're not all by strict athiests) so why not do a song by someone who happened to let her religion out of the bag? And besides, it's a rockin' song!

From Sam Cooke, to U2, to Matisyahu, to just about any country artist, almost all forms of popular music have a great history of artists who blur the lines between the "sacred and the secular".

My band covered "Confined" by As I Lay Dying. They're sort of a Christian band.

I am about as secular as it gets in my own personal theory (Secular humanist), but when it comes to a band I don't think my feelings have anything to do with what we play.

so when I play bluegrass, I would never think of saying 'hey, you know I don't agree with that message', I completely know what's appropriate for what crowd and so on. Plus, I don't get influenced very easily, and don't like to influence if possible, so this just falls under entertainment as far as I am concerned. Be the best entertainer you can.

Doesn't stop me from playing Read Between the Lies by Slayer in another band tho.

It depends if you particularly object to the religious content of the song. If you don't really mind and you like the song as a piece of music then play it.
