So our drummer up and quit the other day. Sucks on several levels, not only because he was a good buddy but we rehearsed at his place and he provided the PA system. He wasn't having fun anymore and decided it was time to move on. Fair enough.

In my opinion, we've plateaued as a band and the spark just isn't there anymore. I'm thinking it's time to move on, but I really enjoy playing with the guitarist and keyboard player. Our lead singer is okay, but not great.

So here are the choices:

1. Try to find a new drummer and work on improving as a band;
2. Quit and find a band that's looking for a bassist; or
3. Convince the guitarist and keyboard player to quit and reform in a new band.

I'm leaning towards #3 because I have an awesome lead singer/rhythm guitarist lined up but no drummer. It's also the hardest choice because I'm not sure if I can convince the guitarist and keyboard player this is the best move.

Anyone been in a similar situation? Just wondering how things worked out. Thanks for listening (I feel like I should be addressing this thread "Dear Casey").

Do something in between 1 and 3!
If you still enjoy the playing and the company of guitare and keyboard player, why blow up those bridges?
Maybe that the input of the new drummer gives the band some new inspiration and oxygen

If there is one thing I've learned over the decades is that "loyalty" among musicians kind of an elusive and rare concept.

Everyone is independent and will stick with the band as long as their own goals are being met.

So that being said, you don't really "owe" anything to the remaining members and there is nothing from keeping you from doing all three of your options simultaneously and seeing what happens. You might find a BETTER drummer. Or maybe the 2 of them want to join you to form something new. OR in the meantime you find an established band that needs a bassist and you get it.

I would keep all options open - and be honest about it - and see what happens.
