Any of you have two bands w/ the same members & play two different styles?

Had practice tonight and started kicking around the idea of writing some punk rock songs and starting a "new" band with a different personality. Same members, just different music. Might be twice the work but it could be fun. Actually, we'd probably just split the practices up & focus half on one band and half on the other. Anyway, wondering if anyone's tried it and how it went if you did.

I guess that's cool, but why not just have it as one band? Wouldn't it be strikingly poser'ish if you had 2 different attitudes for the same ensemble? You can easily have some punk songs mixed with some softer songs. That's why rock bands have ballads, they just need to chill out and get the chicks attention once in a while ;-)

Psychostick/Evacuate Chicago do this. Psychostick is humor metal, but Evacuate Chicago is crappy hardcore. It think once genre will suffer if you do this, so maybe just write what you write and don't worry what it sounds like.

Z Rock? Anyone?

Do what you want. If you feel that one style of music should have one name, and the other another, go for it. You could make a split album with yourselves. But I would choose to be just one band that is eclectic. Cross borders, push boundaries, etc. The band Crotchduster changes styles multiple times, just in one song. And there are bands that start out as one style, who are now a different style.

There's a local band who does this, sorta. Their main gig is called "Mower" and play heavy, high energy stuff, however, they sometimes adopt the name "Slower" and do just the opposite. I believe that they retain the same material though, just completely annoy their audience.

Here here. My band started out as an incredibly bad (and eclectic) pop / top 40 cover band. Somehow at one point an Elvis Presley tune sneaked into our set list, it sounded way better than anything else we did and we slowly evolved towards a rockabilly/rock'n'roll band.

I would, however, love to do something similar to what you have in mind. We sometimes play a rap song mash up of Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" and Queen's "Under Pressure" and it goes down a storm. I would love to do a live set of '80s rap. Preferably under a different name though

im in two bands with the same people. Primate House is my real band and i play bass and some times synth we are a rock band influenced by a lot of 80's and 90's indie rock. Then our joke band is MASTURBATEDRUMTAR: Im on guitar and vocals. the drummer plays bass and one guitar player plays drums and the other one plays symbols and screams.

The Idol Rejects is a 3 or 4 piece folk/rock/blues/reggae/disco/funk/pop whatever band.

The drummer, guitar/key and I are also in The Classics, which adds 3-4 singers and a sax. 50s/60s doo-op harmony stuff. Very cheesy but a hit with the older folks (that have money).

Occasionally the guitar from the Rejects joins the Classics and the sax sometimes joins the Rejects.

Then we are the Classic Rejects

We also do mix and match duo and trio stuff. Depends on who's available and the gig.

Kind of. The keyboard player and myself play in a cover band and a jazz quartet. The cover band is also the rhythm section for a horn band that plays once in a while.

my keyboard player is in all three of my bands (classic rock, progressive/art rock, and a jazz/electronic/dnb/funk band) as well as the same guitar player in the prog and electronic band. go for it if you have a group of people your comfortable playin with feel free to have another project. its easier than having one group that plays everything, its harder to market yourself that way.

There are a few denver bands who come from the same group of people, though each band slightly different. Jim jims, amazing twin, and hindershot all share 3 or 4 common members I think.

With punk and metal, though, it would make sense just to keep it all under the same band name, and change your setlist according to the shows you're on.

Yeah I play in a trio that has two monikers playing original music, one for Progressive Rock and then one for mostly Blues or general Led Zeppelin rip-offs which is the one I feel most at home with. This set-up is really more of a compromise between the guitarist and I because we realized that we each had a preference for one genre slightly more than the other and our audience would get more confused with us playing "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" followed by a half hour of Pink Floyd kind of soundscapes. It has helped us remain together for six and a half years.

Eh, somewhat. My two bands that are with the same people are incredibly different, though. One's metal. One's folk music.
