Had practice tonight and started kicking around the idea of writing some punk rock songs and starting a "new" band with a different personality. Same members, just different music. Might be twice the work but it could be fun. Actually, we'd probably just split the practices up & focus half on one band and half on the other. Anyway, wondering if anyone's tried it and how it went if you did. |

Wouldn't it be strikingly poser'ish if you had 2 different attitudes for the same ensemble? You can easily have some punk songs mixed with some softer songs. That's why rock bands have ballads, they just need to chill out and get the chicks attention once in a while ;-) |

Do what you want. If you feel that one style of music should have one name, and the other another, go for it. You could make a split album with yourselves. But I would choose to be just one band that is eclectic. Cross borders, push boundaries, etc. The band Crotchduster changes styles multiple times, just in one song. And there are bands that start out as one style, who are now a different style.

Their main gig is called "Mower" and play heavy, high energy stuff, however, they sometimes adopt the name "Slower" and do just the opposite. I believe that they retain the same material though, just completely annoy their audience.

My band started out as an incredibly bad (and eclectic) pop / top 40 cover band. Somehow at one point an Elvis Presley tune sneaked into our set list, it sounded way better than anything else we did and we slowly evolved towards a rockabilly/rock'n'roll band.
I would, however, love to do something similar to what you have in mind. We sometimes play a rap song mash up of Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" and Queen's "Under Pressure" and it goes down a storm. I would love to do a live set of '80s rap. Preferably under a different name though |

Then our joke band is MASTURBATEDRUMTAR: Im on guitar and vocals. the drummer plays bass and one guitar player plays drums and the other one plays symbols and screams.

| | Is this thing on? | | Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: Where else? In the dog house. | | The Idol Rejects is a 3 or 4 piece folk/rock/blues/reggae/disco/funk/pop whatever band.
The drummer, guitar/key and I are also in The Classics, which adds 3-4 singers and a sax. 50s/60s doo-op harmony stuff. Very cheesy but a hit with the older folks (that have money).
Occasionally the guitar from the Rejects joins the Classics and the sax sometimes joins the Rejects.
Then we are the Classic Rejects
We also do mix and match duo and trio stuff. Depends on who's available and the gig. |

With punk and metal, though, it would make sense just to keep it all under the same band name, and change your setlist according to the shows you're on.

This set-up is really more of a compromise between the guitarist and I because we realized that we each had a preference for one genre slightly more than the other and our audience would get more confused with us playing "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" followed by a half hour of Pink Floyd kind of soundscapes. It has helped us remain together for six and a half years. |
