back in the 70's and 80's when punk was still relevant? if you precede the punk generation what were your thoughts on punk as a movement when it sprang up?
I'm currently in an art-punk band and we're really trying to do something different with the genre but it'd be cool to hear from those who actually lived it during its heyday |

Edit: This one really confuses me: *Genres are music never really die. but its up to the new generation to reinvigorate the music*
I guess I'll hafta vote that as it makes no sense to me.

Probably closer to your art punk, We did Plastic Ono Band covers, original punk and free jazz (well noise to Coltranes Africa)

I'm currently in an art-punk band and we're really trying to do something different with the genre but it'd be cool to hear from those who actually lived it during its heyday | after watching the early 3 chord stuff morph into some really interesting music i was horrified when punk came along.....seemed like after all the time and effort to have it taken seriously a bunch of posers in dippy costumes decided that rock music needed to be a carnival act once again.....learning how to play instruments was nowhere near as important as spitting on mosh pits full of morons or spray painting walls.....
a phrase sprayed on a wall here comes to mind...."fun to be dumb".....i see punk as the precursor of the slacker bozos i run into all the time who stand on medians with their squeegies and tats and nary a clue.....
sure some good stuff grew out of it but i feel that the eighties might have been a decent decade if the punk thing had never happened

| | | | YEP! I was there...although more of a glam/trash/rock band....saw the first US Sex Pistols show...met them all including Malcolm McClearen...opened several times for the Ramones, opened for The Dead Boys, AC DC, B52's...partied with Blondie, The Attractions (minus Elvis) met the Police and anyone else who came through town...good times from what I remember. Back then everything was punk/new wave including REM and the B 52's. I don't really listen to it too much these days but there was some great music around.

I was the same, although I was "punk", not glam. Opened for the Ramones, Television, Blondie, played the legendary CB's, yada yada. Still kinda carry on the tradition as the "senior citizen" of punk here in Asbury Park. Still doing it old school.
Punk was less a genre and more of a "not over-produced, uber layered, label pushed AOR". Not even a lifestyle, but I guess Malcolm McLaren screwed that up for us as well.
Long Live Joey Ramone. Man I miss him.

Anyhoo, the answer to your question is yes, back in the 80s, just a local bar band sort of thing. I was in high school, the other fellas were in college. Before joining them, I was mostly into prog rock, so it was definitely a shift for me, but it exposed me to a lot of good music that I might not have listened to otherwise (Gang of Four, for instance).

Played with Aggression, Corrosion of Conformity, Suicidal Tendencies, DRI, etc. I actually find the movie American Hardcore very accurate and interesting. The thing that most stuck out during that time period was the sense of underground community mixed with an intense sense of local pride. There was definitely an east coast/midwest/west coast scene and of course everyone thought there's was the best. There was also a real element of danger and excitement at shows which could sometimes get out of hand that was missing once MTV and Hot Topic coopted "pop-punk".
That being said theres great music to be had in every generation and its easier than ever to get it out there but ever harder to make a living doing it. |

I always considered punk to be a hyper-democratic musical movement where people were more interested in making a statement through a band than they were hung up on musical virtuosity. Don't get me wrong, this is not to mean that there were not and are not excellent musicians playing punk - it is just that it was all about feel.
My current guitarist believes that punk was a direct result of the release of Mr. Roboto - a backlash against the ultimate in progressive art-rock narcissism. He may have something there.
