Anyone else get gig antsy?

Sign in to disble this ad
My band hasn't had a gig since April 15th, and our next one isn't until the 24th of this month.
We had a lot of momentum going at the beginning of April with 1 or 2 gigs at least every week or so, but now we're working on recording more songs. We also just moved into a new practice studio, and while recording is fun, it's just not the same, and I feel really restless not having any gigs.
Anyone else feel that way in between gigs?

BTW my first gig ever was in January, then we had to find a new drummer, and we started again at the end of Febuary, so I've only actually played 8 so far. Is it just that the novelty hasn't worn off yet?
Playing shows is easily the most work I've ever done, but also the most fun I've ever had at the same time.

Yeah, it really sucks when your not gigging on a regular basis. I haven't played a gig since March 10th. But from June thru September we're booked at least twice each month. Thank God, cause this is just as bad as having GAS.

if I'm not gigging out 2-3 times a month, I lose interest

I have a gig next week at Highline Ballroom NYC and another show earlier the same day.

Why? Because we're so cool!

We had a good run of gigs in late 2006, and (as usually happens) the band was super-tight by the end of it. Now so far this year, we've played out exactly twice. It does get me down, both the frustration and the lack of income. And, I gotta admit, since I don't really have any other friends it gets kind of lonely, too. It'll be July or August before things pick up.

The situation has to do with the fact that our singer's now available for solo gigs, a much easier and more lucrative proposition from his point of view, and our agency's. That I can see, but it often feels like our cool little combo is just withering away in the absence of work.

It is GAS -- Gig Acquisition Syndrome! And yes, it's just as bad as the other kind, maybe worse, in part because then you can't justify succumbing to the other GAS as readily. I start going nuts without at least one show on the horizon, unless there's other meaningful musical activity like recording or writing.

Had five gigs in March, which is a lot for me. Three in April. Nothing scheduled for May or June

It looked like I was going to get *too* busy, but everything fizzled out at once.

My main band had a gig slump from January 6th to April 19th, and we're going fairly good now... That was my longest gig-slump in nearly 10 years. For the past few years, I have pretty much been in two bands at the same time, or at least a few projects... Since the beginning of the year, it has just been the one band, though I have been trying to keep busy with sub work...

Yeah, I get antsy...

Yeahhhh
That happens to me,
But i dont get to antsy

I focus heaps on the music when i have a break like that.
And it helps prepare for your next gig

If you are having gigs twice a week
Your not going to have much time to make up new songs between them

You might get to make up 1 or 2 between each

But if you have a big break
You'll get alot more down
And they'll be alot better/more complex

I used to play 5-6 nights but my favorite number of nights a week to play were the hard to find 3-4 nighters and if I was playing less than that I'd start getting antsy to play.

Now I'm only playing on Saturdays and am looking at picking up Friday and Sunday at two different bars in town so I can get my fix!
