Anyone use ReverbNation.com

I was curious if this site was at all helpful in finding gigs and/or getting your band's name out? Or is is just a music only version of My Space?

My band has an account. We don't really use it for anything. www.reverbnation.com/dtownbrass

I use it in order to get music on my band's Facebook page:

Signal X | Facebook

Signal X | MELBOURNE, VIC, AU | Alternative / Post Punk / New Wave | Music, Lyrics, Songs, and Videos | ReverbNation

All I've had from ReverbNation really are messages saying play at this or that festival, just a mail shoot, so definitely a scam type arrangement. Song "competions", more entry fees, ignore that. Fan requests from other bands who have no connection to your kind of music, almost certainly haven't listened to it.

Really it does seem to be a restyled MySpace if you ask me.

I see it as a homebase. Through Facebook, twitter, blogs etc.. get your fans/friends to go to your homebase site to listen and buy music/merch/tickets etc. It can't really be used as a social media site to gain fans.

But why do that when your own www. looks much better?

Yes it can. I post a fan collector widget along with show info on craigslist just about every show and always end up with a few new fans on the site. When you link your facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. it will take all the "fans" on those sites as well. You can then send an email to all of those people at the same time as well.

I find their widgets are more useful than the actual site.

Reverbnation can be good, when used correctly. Like a few people said, it isn't really good as a social networking site. But, as a place to host your music, videos, post your gig schedule, and many other things like that, it is great. My band has one, and it is used a lot.

I use it as a hidden "machinery" to produce widgets to use in the band's own www. Also useful to put info on one site and have it updated to all connected sites and socials. Managing mailing list and gig schedule is also a cool feature. I am wondering if anyone answers to their festivals and contest mails.

I found a new venue for us on Reverbnation. They didn't post their email address online due to the overwhelming number of horrible bands and spam they kept getting, and I couldn't find any contact info on Myspace/Facebook, so I searched for them on Reverbnation, sent them a message and voila! We have a show there in 2 weeks.

But I agree - aside from a couple of neat features, I find the site to be pretty useless. And infuriating if you try to access it from an iPhone.

My band got a gig yesterday because of Facebook. And you have to have a Reverbnation page to use Facebook. We place videos and music on it and direct people to it so it does get used. Facebook is better for us but can't have one without the other. So yeah, it pays off for us!
