Audition for new band

Sign in to disble this ad
My old guitarist from my last band is sharing a practice space with some guys that are looking for a bassist. They're supposedly very talented musicians that play proggish type rock - all originals. He talked me way up to them (he plays with the drummer in another project) and got me an audition for next week.

These guys look like they really have their $#!@ together. They want to do 2 covers for the audition - Limelight by Rush and Stinkfist by Tool. Honestly, though it shouldn't be a big deal, I'm a little nervous. I haven't played (or learned) covers in about 10 years, when I was in a Queensryche tribute band in the late 90's. Any suggestions for me to quickly get up to speed with these two? Beyond this, they're in the writing stages of original material right now so it shouldn't be an issue again. Just something about getting them note for note makes me nervous.

I would find out what key the band is playing it in, then get tabs and transpose them and play with recordings until your are sick of the songs.

Good luck

Limelight isn't too hard of a song from what i remember. If you're in a pinch, you can get a program called guitar pro. It's similar to tabs, but it'll play it back for you as well - in most cases, with the guitar/drum/vocal parts.

Yeah, I don't remember it being too hard either. I'm just gonna have to get the tab for the bass during the solo, b/c I can't make it all out.

Thanks for the tip about guitar pro. I think I'll look into it.

Play a solo and let them decide.

Farfetched,

Thanks! That is a great program. Lets you solo the bass tracks in parts where it may be hard to decipher. The tabs I found for Stinkfist were a little off, but nothing that a decent ear and a little common sense won't fix.
