Question Music choices for auditioning?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for some ideas for a "show me whatcha got" cd for any auditions I may need one for. Is it better to play songs that you know the band isn't going to play - but shows off your skills? or to play stuff that's popular with the local live acts...stuff the band will be playing. This is new to me - I'm just now getting to the point that I'm ready to try auditioning. A few of the songs I already have down and plan to use are - Money (Pink Floyd), Spirits in the Material World (Police), War Pigs (Sabbath). I chose these because the timing is a little more difficult than most stuff I hear in the clubs...any other ideas?
Thanx

Maybe think up a couple things that ARENT actual songs and record them? That will help in showing your creative abilities unless they happen to be cover bands.

The best idea IMO for a demo cd to showcase your skills is one thats diverse & contains a lil bit of every style & technique you know. This will show a degree of versatility.

I love what you have chosen so far! If anything, I would run other musical styles on your recording as well. Show diversity and you will get an audition

I think whether or not to "choose" material for an audition depends on the situation itself. With most of the bands I've auditioned before, they gave me a few songs to learn beforehand. I guess it couldn't hurt to have some sort of tape or CD, though, considering that someone lookng for a bassplayer e-mailed me the other day and asked for a demo and photo!

I'd say cass is right - you need a collection of tracks that show your bass playing at it's best in every style you want to cover.

Also, 99.9% of bands dont want a bass player with chops... that's the guitarists job!

So, personally, when I build a demo CD - which I will be doing soon, I wont be putting any chops stuff on there. Just tracks that show my playing for what it is.

If a band wants me to audition by showing off, they're probably not the kind of band I want to work with.

Now if they want to test my musicianship, that's a different story.
