Bad vibe.

Has anyone ever felt a bad vibe when contacting someone on CL about joining a band? I recently got in contact with a guy looking for a bass player and could not get much info out of him. I asked what they were playing and he tossed out a few artist names but i could never get a set list or at least some songs they were playing. Also communication was sketchy. I did not get a good feeling about it and will probably cancel the meeting. Anyone ever go through something like this?

All the time.

Sometimes my intuition has been proved right, sometimes wrong. I usually try to at least meet the people involved before I pass judgement......but I just enjoy meeting new people.

In general most of my initial judgements of other people and bands prove to be wrong or simplistic in the end.

I wouldn't automatically cancel a meeting because of a "bad vibe".

Trust your instincts & tell him you need a definitive list of at least 5 songs or it's probably just a jam fest.

I think you are right. I'm already with a group of guys that just want to jam and looking to get out of it.

Any time I`m dealing with CL I`m always on the side of caution - or paranoia lol.

I will say that some people don`t know how to properly communicate via CL. I emailed a band once that was looking to hire and I asked the typical questions - What`s your experience, what all are you playing, how far do you want to take the band, what would you want me to know for an audition, etc... and they kept responding with, "Hi, check out our myspace." I proceeded to do so and found no information about them. They had no songs up, only a handful of pics(none of them from performances), and an incredibly short list of influences. I said screw it, found a different band, and continued on with my life. After about 3 weeks, however, I finally got another email from that band asking if I liked them and wanted to join - What the hell? - I told them I moved on and that if they wanted to find a bassist who would stick they should respond to us like people instead of assuming we`d come crawling into any quagmire of a band that offered us a gig.

When it comes to CL, if a band can't show me a website with a calendar that has gigs on it that I can verify from the bar's website, I'm not interested, period. I know that I can get up to speed in time to play with an established band, but there's no guarantee that a band is ever going to start gigging if they aren't already.

And yeah, if I get a bad vibe about anything on CL, I'm gone. I don't owe anything to anybody I haven't met, so I'm not really concerned about hurting their feelings by not wanting to join them.

If a band won't answer a few simple questions and send me a set list I won't pursue it any further.

This isn't a court of law. You don't have to prove anything beyond the shadow of a doubt. If your gut tells you something is amiss well... evolution put that there for a reason.

I have gone out on a few auditions from CL before and have had a couple of really weird ones and actually some good ones also. Two bands i played with in the past and a jam band i'm currently in i found through CL so i know it can work. But i have never received a such a bad feeling about one like this one. Not just lack of communication but kind of strange so i decided to turn it down. I could be wrong but it just does not seem right for some reason, just a gut feeling.

Yeah, it's pretty common. Some kid (or immature adult) wants to be a star, buys a guitar, learns a few chords, and then has the idea to form his own band. The CL listings around here are full of such ads.

This is a fool proof guideline if your looking for real work.
