BADDDDDD GUITAR TONE Stubborn guitarist

Sign in to disble this ad
ok so i HATE the Boss metalzone.

Story, i'm in a thrash metal band we've been together for a year and well i love it i just have 1 gripe. Guitarist tone....now usually i would stay out of it its his sound ok.....but this nahhhhh this is possibly the worst guitar tone i've ever heard recorded like TERRIBLE wayyyyyyyyy too harsh. It would not be an issue if it wasn't SO BAD, i listen to a lot of metal and there are a lot of harsh empty, crumby tones in there but my god this is a new level too bad.

It is actually an issue that listener may not want to listen to our new demo because the guitar tone hurts their ears.

And when i tell him i get **** for it, trying to find a warmer tone its like nahhhh get away its never distorted enough.

That boss metalzone, trys other pedals he likes nothing but this and for the sake of the band i can't show these to anybody the new demo sounds like crap because of it i'm embarassed.

ANY advice?

here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBeS8nbdvmo

(oh forgot to mention the link to my band is the old demo, this is not the tone i'm complaining about)

Yeah, I play a little bass too. I could tell what you were doing there. You were playing some major and minor scales. I was watching your hands.

So he likes his tone and you don't. What would you tell him if he said you were way too clean and bassy?

Find a band you like the sound of.

i have a problem with my guitar players tone

we don't play metal

but he trys to get a marshal stack sound out of a mesa boogie combo which has ONE 12inch speaker, it just ain't happening!!! Marshal stack, atleast 8 10 inch speakers, Mesa Boogie combo, 1 12inch, no matter how you tweak it you ain't gonna get the sound of 8 speakers blasting at ur face!

he trys to boost the bass in his EQ to get that in your face 8 speakers blasting at you and it just sounds like mud! (obviously!) we argue and argue but there's one thing you can ALWAYS be SURE on:

guitard players are always right!!!!

unfortunately some can't be reasoned with!

good luck!

Have you tried turning his amp off? That should clean it right up.

Do you have a link or can you post the new demo so we can see what you're talking about?

Sure here you go.

This is a clip of our title track, the mixing still has to be done better (highhats are too loud etc) but the tone is there and its ugliness is alive and well.

It's pretty thin, but I wouldn't call it terrible. I could see a few slight tweaks to the Metalzone tone, and it would be tolerable, IMO.

The overall recording is full of treble. Use a word that sounds metal when you try to explain a tone thing, which is subjective no matter what. Say he needs more "crunch" or that big ass " mesa tone", and what other pedals are there? Some guitar players are trying to get a low sound anyway, pushing into our territory. I'm a little surprised he wouldn't want to try something. Anything.

i had a metalzone when I played guitar and didn't really know anything about sound. When you learn about sound, you learn how your instrument is supposed to be placed and what makes that "mesa sound" or "marshall sound". The metalzone just sucks. Puts a ridiculous amount of the most unnatural distortion into a signal and puts a massive mid scoop on the tone. You get vibrant highs and powerful lows, but no midrange and absolutely no depth. The isolated frequencies are sweetened but just makes everything sound crispy and dead. Explain that to him.

Ever seen a pro with a metalzone on their board? no, cuz it just isn't musical. Just lets you get some scream out of your warwick and crappy crate combo.

Not my cup of tea but I've certainly heard worse. IMO it pretty much works w/the track/genre/style/vibe.

That recording doesn't sound bad, IMO. The only thing I would say is that the guitar's lack of mids is making it slide to the background of the music at certain points.

Hopefully you'll be able to reason with your guitarist to explain how a more balanced EQ will ensure that his riffs are actually heard in the mix. Won't hurt to stroke his ego a bit, hehe.
