Thumbs down A band built upon lies... Anyone?

Wondering if anyone else has been through a situation similar to this?

I join this band "Grenadiers of the Doomed" And I was with them for about 9-10 months. A month or two into it the rhythm guitard/singer announces that he got an email back from NBC stating that we will be a featured band on the Conan O'Brien show. And of course everyone freaks out and we're excited... Skip forward about 8 months... Our drummer out of nowhere left the band, We replace him with a new guy and the day the new guy joins the guitard tells him "your going to be on Conan" ok... So about a month goes by... The guitard is pretty much putting down the Conan show and saying "we need to work on getting signed before the show... and if we do we can cancel the show and start touring" I find that to be very awkward! So I did a DNS check on the domain... And it just so happened to be registered to the moron.

I tell the other guys about it 2 days ago, They get pissed like I expected, the next day I goto the practice room to remove my gear until everything calms down and is figured out. Unknown to me, they all bind togethor and decide to boot me out of the band. I've showed them an insane amount of proof that he lied about it... And he topped it off with another lie after they found out, saying "man! it must have been a scam! I got scammed!"

Yet the guys took his side and kicked me out of the band... I'm also led to believe that he's been pocketing all the money from the shows, Because his brother the other guitarist told me to leave the keys at the practice space and he will give me my share of the gig money... Which is really weird, because since I joined the band... I havn't got payed for any gigs, because apparently they were free shows... And the gig I'm getting payed for, we have played there quite a few times.

I don't know... it's just a big mess. Morons like that deserve to be beat.

Altough on the plus side, I do have alot of leverage over the band, This whole story is sure to give them a bad impression around the Portland area... And theyre playing gigs at bars with an underage drummer who just so happens to be snagging beers off of the tables when people arent looking. I have a feeling alot of theyre shows will be getting canceled really soon

i read about that on myspace, that really sucks dude.
do you think they knew about the whole thing?
i saw the evidence i mean they cant deny it.
just spread the word around and they will get some negative rep but i guess that could lead to repercussions because i dont know if they would do stuff to you.

whatever though you were probably too good for them, why dont you work with the drummer that "left"?

shame though, i left my band as well.

im back in it though

There was a burst there where I was getting multiple invites in rapid succession on myspace to join some grenadiers of the doomed fanclub or something like that, it was a bit annoying.

Personally I think theyre whole family may have been in on it. The lead guitarist was acting a little weird when I told him... He was VERY calm about the whole situation. 30minutes later after riding with his brother back to the practice space he gets out of the truck slams the door and is super pissed... So... Maybe he told his brother that I caught on and is putting on a play now acting like he's just mad at him... I can't say for sure, But I really think the whole family is in on it.

I'm in debt because of this, The second he told us about Conan and that it was pretty much a done deal. I ran out and picked up my Markbass rig so I would have something better than my little Ampeg 120watt combo. I know it was problaby stupid of me to do that, But when you hear info like this ya tend to jump on it.

The drummer is a new guy though, He saw my blog post, ALL of the evidence and still refuses to believe it's a lie. He's talking about investing a ton of money in the band (around the thousands range) and is pretty much ignoring me and my wife now.

I think it's funny how I found out the truth, All the lies, and there were more lies to go ontop of that to cover up the truth again... And in the end, I was booted out of the band.

Although I do have to agree, I was WAYYY too good for them. You can listen to theyre crapola @ myspace.com/grenadiersofthedoomed and then my stuff @ myspace.com/caseytinsley and compare the difference in technicality.

Hint #1: If you don't have an album to sell, you're not playing the Conan O'Brien show.

Yeah, I think it may have been one of the guys... They went a bit nuts with the spamming. And with all that spamming... We got at most 50 people out to a show... Which is why I really started to question the whole Conan thing.

On the upside... Out of this I did gain some experience points (sorry... a little diablo/nox reference there) A FREE Fender MIM 60th Anniversary Jazz bass (which I quickly de-fretting and epoxied) and a FREE groovy little Behringer mixing board which I will now use for my solo bass stuff.

The thing is, I want to be mature about this... But I only wish for the worst for them.

Actually, At the time we did... But they quickly scrapped it once the drummer left and was going to start on a new one. I was suppose to begin tracking this week.

Thats quite disturbing, just why though? I dont understand why, is it just for the money i mean why lie about a Conan show?

Ah I see, yeah i can completely understand why. I was in that situation before, i lost my best bass because of it (a NT Thumb)

Oh that one guy that has a picture of him smoking?
im the one kid with the guitar swung over his back (when i played guitar for about a month) im gladly back on bass

Thats just terrible man, well just look to better things.

Yeah i listened to them, they arent that great.
your stuff makes them look not so good.

i'd say you've now learned several things:
1. Most people involved in bands who have nothing going on are full of@#$%
2. Where family is involved, you aren't going to win
3. The band will now pay you to go away. make sure they do before turning over any keys.
4. You're much better off without these yahoos.
5. This will never happen to you again.

......i agree with clank and would add......folks who dont make a habit of back biting, rumor mongering etc often find themselves victimized by those who do..........remember to keep ears open, mouth closed and, dont be afraid to check the facts discreetly .....probably better in most situations to have a stock excuse for taking expensive gear home than to leave at the practice site too

Yeah, I'm suppose to be dropping my keys off at the space sometime next week, Money is suppose to be sitting down there for me to "make up" for all of this.

And +1 for the not leaving gear at a practice space... I've learned this big time. I will be installing casters on my Trace cab and using that for my next band if I'm not the one who's name is on the lease for the space, The gear will be going home with me every night.

for the price of casters you can probably find a decent 2 wheel dolly and if you get a good one with rails for stair climbing you can save a lot of grunt work.......

My advice is to put it all behind you, and don't try to denounce the band. If you start a pissing contest with these guys, and they are as smooth as they appear to be, all they need to do is respond with righteous indignation. They will win and you will lose.

Bring a friend when you go to get your stuff.

Remember the famous adage: "Living well is the best revenge."

"An album to sell" means a major label with an album to sell.

I already have all of my stuff out of the room, I made sure that was one of the first things I did!

So my wife calls the lead guitarist (because apparently he's still a friend) and he says to her "you guys are a bunch of assholes" because I contacted one of the clubs they will be playing and told them about the drummer being under 21 and snagging beers off of peoples tables.

This just keeps getting better and better... Once I drop off my keys, the ignore button will be quickly put to use

Obviously, your former band mates don't seem to understand the business aspect of running a bar: namely don't violate the liquor laws period. If the bar loses its license for serving underage persons, they will spread the word fast and the band will never work locally again.

This is serious stuff; it can cost the bar owner a huge amount of money. Your former friends are boneheads. (Gee, I'm not usually that unkind.)
