Band drama, what should i do?

Sign in to disble this ad
my band has been making changes to our songs recently to make better use of our new singer's voice and style. 2 practices ago, a mistake was made while playing a song that ended up making the song sound better. the lead guitarist and i pointed out to the rest of the band that the mistake made the song sound cooler, so we decided to keep it in.

last practice, we were playing the song and we got to the "mistake" part. everyone hit it the way we had decided to do it, except for the singer and the lead guitarist. he looks at me and asks what we were doing, i told him we were playing the song the way we had decided to do it at the last practice. i explain how it's done, he says okay, we do it again. get to the same part, everyone hits it except the lead guitarist. he looks at me and asks what we're doing. i tell him we're playing the song the new way. he asks when we changed it, i told him last practice. the lead guitarist flips out, yanks his cable out of his amp and starts packing his gear. while doing this, he's giving my @$$ a royal chewing. i look around, the singer looks puzzled, the drummer and other guitarist are looking at the floor.

he tells me that i'm making things up, holding the band back, and that they've all had a problem with me for a while. he accuses me of "riding" him, and calls me several names that i can't repeat on this forum. he storms out yelling at the top of his lungs.

as soon as he's gone, i look around the room, and the singer is the only one not staring at the floor. i tell them that if there's a problem, let's work it out now. the drummer and guitarist both tell me that they have no problem with me, and they didn't know that he did. they tell me i should forget about it, and just chalk it up to the lead guitarist being tired and stressed out because of his personal life. 5 minutes later, the guitarist comes back, shakes my hand, and sets his gear up. i look at my cell phone, notice the time, and tell them i have to get going. the guitar player quietley packs up his equipment again, shows some pictures of his new cat to the singer, and leaves. 5 minutes after he goes, i go.

i've been with this band for about 4 months, and no drama like this has ever happend. i'm kind of lost about what to do at this point, as i like this band and don't want to leave, but i don't want to stay if it's causing problems. the other guitar player's wife is the most straight forward person i've ever met, and i asked her if they had a problem with me, knowing she wouldn't b.s. me. she said that it was the first and only time she's ever heard anyone complain about me. i want to believe her, but at the same time, i am:

a) bass player number 4, and the only one that has lasted more than 3 weeks. one lasted 3 weeks, and was kicked out for being high, the other 2 came for an audition and told them they weren't interested in the style.
b) i own the p.a. if i leave, the p.a. goes with me, and they know that. none of them are in a situation right now that would allow them to purchase a replacement.
c) i have the hook-up for the demo. we're going in next month to a studio owned by a friend of mine to do a 5 song demo, completely free of charge. the only other studio connection this band has is a friend of the drummer, who will charge $30 per hour.

i'd like to think that they're being honest with me, and the guitarist was just having a bad day and looking for someone to go off on, but there is a possibility that i'm only being used for the above reasons. i've never been in a situation like this, and i'm not sure of what to do.

Not great news & not a good sign, but sometimes we can all be jerks. If it's the first time this has happened I'd be inclined to let it go & chalk it up to a bad day. & let them know that a recurrance warrants at least a band meeting on that issue & at worst you packing up & leaving right then.

I think you're worrying about nothing. In awkward situations like this, bystanders (the rest of the band) will often look away in an attempt to "escape" a situation.

The guitarist should definitely be checked for being bipolar, having dimensia or some other mental illness. He came up with the idea, had you explain it twice, and then couldn't remembered and freaked out about it? Sounds a bit strange to me, especially given his attitude upon return.
