It would explain the wanking, teaching you one song, and getting stuff done when you're not there.
Either way, it sounds like trouble.

| | | | yeah im an official member. my name is on their myspace, they introduce me as the " bassist of the band ". I would ask for recordings but besides 1 song ( the one i know ) they dont have any recent recordings ( all of the other recordings they have are out-dated with many mistakes and many of the parts have been changed since then ). I am going to give them another practice or two then decide. |

First, I see that you are 17, but I don't know how much playing experience you have, so I can't make any assumptions. If you are starting out, you would probably benefit from playing with people as much as possible, even if it is kind of loose jamming. So, you might get some decent practice if nothing else.
Second, if you want to make them get more serious, you could go a long way by forcing their hand. Set up a gig for you to play live - it doesn not matter what it is, just set something up to give the band something to work toward. This will set a tangible goal and could give the band purpose. This will also give you a chance to see where the band could go. Finally, if you are the one setting up the gigs, you will be in the driver's seat.

| | what goes here? | | Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: Denton, Texas | | | It might just take a little time to be warmly welcomed into the fold. Bands are tight knit little groups. It's normal for them to exclude you at first. They aren't used to you yet and are waiting to see if you'll make it with their band or not.
Be patient and definately learn their material any way that you can.
I joined a new band not too long ago. They picked me from the auditions that they had, but I didn't feel very included at the first 3 or 4 rehearsals. But I worked very hard and learned the material. One day the guitarist said: "We should try to go back over some of the songs that we cut from the list earlier". "Some of those tunes were cut because of the bass playing".
As soon as the other guys heard him say that... I was drawn into the fold. |

Seriously, a cheapo boom box that has a cassette and a condenser mic in it is all you need. Bring one to practice, and just record each song that you need to learn. It really helps a lot.
And if they're pissy about that, then they really are not serious, and you can do better than them.

Basically, go talk w/ the guys... Talk to them about your concerns. If you communicate in a normal manner, you should be able to resolve the issues. The opposite would be going all passive aggessive & then blowing up...
If you cant get thru to them, then its time to consider your options. |

| | | It must be pretty common for a band that's lost its bassist to not have any direction
The band I'm in now, I joined 3 years ago. I was a replacement bass player for one they threw out because he was in too many other bands.
I got a list of the songs (covers) they do and we agreed on 3 to do at the next practice. After I arrived and met the rest of the band, I set up my gear while the "wankfest" went on. I just stood there while the guitar player demonstrated how versed he was with pentatonic scales(yea, they all think they invented those chord structures), the keyboard player dootled on something, and the drummer played one riff after another...
This went on for more than 45 min. I didn't think I was in my place to say anything because I was new in the band. After another 5 minutes when by, I couldn't take it anymore and stopped them from playing and said "hey, let's play something"
From that point on, I'm pretty much what keeps the band in a direction during rehearsal.
So, this just goes to show: Bass players are leaders...Everyone else has ADD | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
