Bandleader here.. There's a whole lot more to it than you might think. Even in the situation I'm in which is a well-booked and well-compensated agency band, there's a whole lotta psychology involved.. Speaking for myself, I have to agree with Tzer that communication is king.. Some band members are comfortable coming to me with any questions and concerns.. Others need me to come to them and help them feel more comfortable communicating with me directly.. Sometimes they need to hear why you're calling or not calling certain songs or pacing a night a certain way. That all said, there's a few other requirements.. First is to set expectations so everyone knows what's expected of them, 2nd is to enforce those expectations.. That may at times mean handing someone walking papers.. 3rd is to lead by example and inspire others toward constant improvement and high standards.. There's a whole lot more but if you're in a band that's led by an egomaniac, my guess is that these basic points will be lacking..
