the tone of this suggests he's of higher status than you, at least in your mind. if that's the case you shouldn't tell him anything.

What the bl did was a rookie move. How long has he been in this business?

I have seen many bands make mistakes. But never once have I seen a band point out their mistakes to the audience.

any time you feel you don't have power you are powerless. if you are powerless you're better off not worrying about it. the powerless don't solve problems.

I don't know if I would call it higher status. I did join the band as a replacement for the original bass player. The drummer has only been with us for a couple months. So in that way I guess he and the guitar player have higher status being the two original members. Even though he doesn't see himself as the front man, many of the fans do. All four of us sing lead on various songs. I still think he needs to know I don't find his actions appropriate. If I can't be in a band were I can offer my input then I don't want to be in it!

good deal. you should just lay it out then. in the op you asked for the best way to solve it, if you don't have enforcement capability you're kind of at his mercy on the "solving" front.

If the bl thinks what he did was professional you have a problem on your hands.

I always make the excuses up front. You know, "This is a new song for us and we have a new drummer, so we're gonna kinda suck. Just bear with us - we'll suck less next time."

The tone of this suggests that he THINKS he is of higher status. Someone needs to put him in his place. The band should have a meeting with him.

Exactly.

His actions really were totally not acceptable, and 90% out there would not accept it. If I was in a band with that guy, I'd tell him that was the last time. One more, and find another bass player.

No one wants to hear about your mistakes. Every band at every level makes them, and at every gig too. The class response to clams is to show nothing at all, no emotion, and guess what, your audience will also know nothing, I pretty much guarantee it. If you're not comfortable coming straight out and saying so, how about printing some of our responses and showing him?

i agree, but since the guy isn't replaceable he may be the bandleader.

all our information is from the op. that's the only person that's supplied a tone. i'm not saying i don't sympathise. i do completely. but the op has elevated the offender by classifying him as not fireable.

I've been in bands that replaced the BL. In one case it was in the middle of the summer when we had a tour booked.

again, i agree. but the op has said in this thread that he does not feel this person can be fired.

he did not say he was the band leader. that was the only possible position i could come up with that was unfireable... my way of reconciling the unfathomable.

No matter how irreplaceable the guy is, if the band's reputation is important to him and he doesn't want to make it any harder to get gigs, he just shouldn't pull off a stunt like that.

You should make him realize that he's not really hurting your personal reputation, he's mostly hurting the band's reputation and his own reputation because he apparently hired so bad players in his band.

The only situation where you have to admit you've messed up is when you mess up so badly that everyone will surely notice. Even then you just shrug it off with a short joke or a funny face and a some laugh.

the easiest way to make such people ignore little flaws is to make clear that the audience doesnt notice them
tell him that nobody except the band cares for the mistakes.

That is what I told him last night after the gig! Especially when the compliments kept coming at the end of the night from the patrons and the owner of the bar. They could have cared less that we were off tempo a couple times or forgot a couple words to a song.
