Which band name?

Sign in to disble this ad
Please give reasonings, your approx age group, and music style preferences if you would. It would help me greatly. Also, what type of music would you assume this is?

Thank you greatly.

And just to ad, this is a 3 piece. Female singer, Me on bass and some vocals, and Drums.
Playing things int he style of
Portishead, Queens of the stone age, jazzy, funky, more riff oriented less chordal movement.
Some effects, mainly just my SR5 coming through.
Playing finger style mainly, 1 song is picked, no slap OK... maybe some.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think all of those names are terrible.

As for what type of music I assume it is based solely on the names, here goes:

Glory Whore
Sounds like an emo band. Perhaps one that is trying to be "harder" or "darker" than most.

Strangely Invulentary

Is that supposed to be "Involuntary"? Either way it strikes me as a high school hard rock band or a poor attempt at some Zappa-like weirdness. Either way it doesn't roll off the tongue at all and is the worst of the three IMO.

Dynamite Pond

This strikes me as whimsical or absurd. It makes me think the band is either (again) Zappa like or is a goofy pop-punk band like Blink 182 or Bowling for Soup. By default this is my choice of the three.

Yes it should be Involuntary. Thanks.
Please say what you want, I will not take any comments as rude unless you are trying to be hurtful.

Well, I'm glad as I was trying to help and be honest about it. Band names are funny in that so often a ton of time is spent on something that has little or nothing to do with the band's success or lack thereof. A good or clever band name doesn't open any doors, but a bad one can hamstring you a bit.

Personally, I'd go back to the drawing board rather than use one of those names, but of course it also depends on what kind of music you play.

I would avoid using the word "whore" in the title since you have a female singer.

I'd go with Dynamite Pond, of the three. That seems like it would be a band name.

Considering the style you're going for, I picked Dynamite Pond, although it reminds me of Bardo Pond, which is another female-fronted band. Strangely Involuntary is a mouthful and sounds contrived. Glory Whore sounds like a blood-covered female-fronted hardcore punk band.

I'm 30 and I'd give you guys a listen by the description you give.

You might want to think how the names would look in print (newspaper ads, marquees, posters, etc.) The trouble with Glory Whore is that there is only one meaning for whore for most folks, unlike (for example) Pussycat Dolls which is more of a double entendre. You might find yourself unbookable in some venues and in some parts of the country.

I vote for Dynamite Pond.

I agree that "Glory Whore" mightn't be appropriate with a female singer but how about "The Glory Whores"?

"Strangely Involuntary" is too much of a mouthful.
Too many syllables in each word.
If it was "Strangely ***", (*** being a one-syllable word) it would sound better.
I still wouldn't bother though.

"Dynamite Pond" sounds to me like.....nothing really.
It sounds as if you have just thrown random words together.
Avoid, IMHO.

I clicked "Strangely Involuntary" only because I remember somebody saying that in a movie recently. What movie was it? But that potential movie-reference memory connection is its only redeeming value. WNP had a good idea there, "Glory Pond" has an interesting ring, and I could see it on a stoner-groove-mood-rock band. If you want to get fancy, "Glorious Pond" is whimsical and a little more euphonious.

It's probably been said on this site in the past, but if you want guaranteed crowds at your gigs, call the band Free Beer All Night. People will flock to the place every time they see the posters reading "Free Beer All Night This Friday From 9PM"

Being serious, I agree with the above comments in that none of the names really works for me, but really really don't go anywhere near the second - it's too much of a mouthful, so much so that in the time it's taken me to read the thread and post, I haven't remembered it - this will happen with your audience too.

I'm not trying to take this into the gutter...em...bathroom...but do you know what a Glory HOLE is? When I see the name Glory Whore, all I can think of is glory hole. What can I say...I live in LA.
I dunno, maybe that is your bands intention ?

Of the three, I would pick Dynamite Pond.

Yep, many of these where the same things I was thinking.
Even Glory whore=Glory Hole.

A dynamite pond is a pond that is fished with dynamite "and the windows lept up like frogs in a dynamite pond" Fear and Loathing in LasVegas."

Strangely involuntary is from Ratatoue.

Thanks for your time.

Glory Whore is the only one that grabbed me and created a mental image. I'm 45 and play rock covers, blues and some simple jazz

where is the option for all of them sucking. Seriously, unless you want to be playing in small bars for the rest of your life, could you see any of those names on a big bill? I think not, but thats just my opinion.

To be honest, i would choose none of the three you´ve listed. IMO a Bands Name should be short and for the Audience easily to keep in Mind.

I think it doesen´t has to have a big Meaning, but it has to sound good and has to stay good in Mind.
