Band Name Banner?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sure all these questions are driving people crazy - if so, sorry - I just have a few more:

It seems to me that you'd have to be crazy not to be displaying your band name in some way that's so in your face that anybody seeing you couldn't help but to know the name of the band that's playing at that moment. If this is true, that makes me crazy, currently.

Would you guys mind telling me what you do, or whether you think it makes a difference, do you have a banner, where do you get them made, just any info and/or comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Just as I was typing this I remembered "The Beatles" on Ringo's bass drum. I want those next morning hungover people to know who they saw the night before, instead of them telling somebody "you know, that band with the chick singer, blah blah".

Thanks

People will REMEMBER who you are because of WHO you are! Banners can help to remind them of that when the band is forgettable.

And yes, I have helped roll up the banner many a late Friday/Saturday night.

i have made fun of bands with huge and unwarranted banners in the past, my guitar player and drummer have as well- so it's not just me. i will continue to make fun of bands with banners. anything beyond a logo on a kick drum head is pretty goofy.

of course, i am not just a random bar patron. so i am probably not in the target banner demographic.

Ok, this is good to know. That's why this forum is here, to learn stuff. I'm inclined to agree with you and just looking at Homebrew's ^ - that looks sweet.

Going a bit O/T - what about drum risers? Would you own one, and use it at any gig where there was room to use it? I know, personally, I love watching a good drummer if I can see them - that's entertainment to me.

Drum risers, banners, etc. - seems like half the people like them, the other half makes fun of them. Do whatever you think will make your band more visible or noticeable in different situations.

riser? that's production, not something you should concern yourself with, unless you want to own a staging company.
banner=lame. (yes, i've been in bands that used them when i was a kid. hated it. same thing as between every tune saying your bands name, buy our cd, sign our mailing list etc.)
come on, people will look for all that if they want it. otherwise, it is just annoying.
basically, it's just amateur imho, and makes you look that way.

Ok, sounds like I'm thinking too much - I have a tendency to do this. I do like the idea of the band name on the bass drum though. Other than that we'll just keep doing what we've been doing, and making sure the music kicks major ass.

As far as getting the band name out there, maybe get someone to hand out cards during the breaks and thank the people for coming to the club or possibly hitting up all the cars in the club parking lot with a flier/card during the gig.

How about stenciling the PA mains grill cloth with the band's name with florescent white paint? Put some small blacklights out front and everyone will see the band's name, no matter what the club lighting is. It doesn't have to be a huge display, just something that gives some visibility. I've seen some small blacklights that fit into regular bulb fixtures.

We used to use quite a few percussion instruments on some tunes so we had a suitcase with the band name visible on it and kept it in front of the drum kit. Drummer didn't use front heads.

What a cool idea. Thanks Stumbo.

We bought a vinyl banner we use. I've removed hte Hartke on an extension cab and am having the band name done in a plastic to replace it. Biz cards and a $5 sample CD help too!

+1

Or maybe get the logo cut metal, lucite, etc., paint it and then and mount it to the PA mains and couple of other speaker boxes.

Stenciling the name on the side of speaker cabs, drum, guitar or rack mount cases, etc. could help also.

Stumbo, I really love your idea about stenciling. I'm gonna stencil the band name on my guitar cases for a start. I know I'd be taking some risk of lowering the value of the case, but big deal (and it might even come off). Then do the "accidentally on purpose" placement of them, where it's visible to the audience - it gets the job done, and as a side bonus, it kind of makes your band look bigger than you really are, from an image standpoint. Plus the rest of the band knows you must be really committed to this band, for whatever that's worth.

Stencils AND banners can be obtained at any local sign shop.

The people that think it's amateur looking haven't a clue.
The Rolling Stones don't need banners.

I can't begin to tell you how many bands I've seen, and left NOT knowing their name.
Even friend's bands, that I know all the player's names.

Ask the bartender. Huh?

Whomever said that banners are amateur, obviously hasnt been out to see alot of punk and hardcore bands. Ive seen new and established acts use them. Alot of bands use banners, especially when they dont have the 50 million dollar touring machine behind them that the stones have. My personal favourite, is the band NOFX, who last i saw had a banner up, that was about 2 foot by 4 foot, which is tiny. hilarious but tiny.
