I've been very lucky to have a supportive wife who graduated from art school. She's always made banners or signs of some type for the bands I've been in. Some simple, some cheesy, some very well thought out and executed. Here's a "road sign" she created for a now de-funct band. It tied in perfectly with the whole "theme" of our name, matched our business cards, logo, flyers and went along with the caution/ stripe tape on everything as well as the yellow rope lights with black tape.

I've been in the sign business for as long as I've been playing bass. About thirty years. There's a lot of nice, professional and simple ways to get your name on stage. Think "trade show display".I like those vertical banners that have a self standing frame. I've even made those out of 1" PVC. Then sprayed with flat black Krylon.
I would advise having a commercial artist do the design. It's only going to look cheesy if it IS cheesy. i.e. Be sure to plagiarize tastefully!
I'm not soliciting here. Believe me. I'm waaaaaaay too busy.
