CAUTION CAUTION *Band Drama Alert* CAUTION CAUTION
Alright, I'm going to endeavour to tackle a bit of a touchy subject. I'm going to try to be objective about it as possible. Ryan recently said he wanted to add "and the Cadillac Bloodmen" to the band name. I think we should discuss it. For the record, and let me be absolutely clear about this, in my opinion its ultimately Ryan's decision. That said, I just want to present some information and have a discussion about this name change, because in my opinion its an important subject that should not be just glossed over. Ryan has probably already sensed that Bob and I would prefer if we just left the name as Dick Cash.
Here are my main reasons:
"Dick Cash and the Cadillac Bloodmen"
-is too long
-it separates us… meaning that it sounds more like an artist with a backing band rather than a united band on equal footing.
-some may find it confusing.
On the other hand its unique and definitely has that 50's feel to it.
In an effort to get some totally objective opinions about this, I've posted a thread on this subject on a bass forum I belong to. These guys are all musicians and have no vested interest in anything. They say exactly what they think and in my opinion are very objective as they have nothing to gain or lose. Just chit chat.
Here are some of their comments in red: "I like Dick Cash and The Cadillacs
the bloodmen bit sounds silly" Dick Cash sounds hip.
add "...and the anything," and it sounds dated. If you want to sound at all "unusual and artistic" you will avoid cliches like "and the" anything. Short Quick and Simple. Dick Cash is the way to be. Dick Cash is nice, simple... and slightly provocative/funny.
I recommend leaving it. Adding the ending is kinda trivial, IMHO. Just agree to whatever. "and the _____" is kinda long, so even if that's picked, it'll eventually wind up truncated. I like Dick Cash & the Cadillac Bloodmen, even though it's a bit convoluted. It sounds unique, which is at least half the battle. It does sound like a 'frontman/backing band' arrangement though... Cadillac Blood sounds like a name someone came up with after witnessing a car wreck.
Here is a poll on which name was preferred:
Dick Cash ::Saint::, Adam Bomb, agreatheight, awakefie, billjr, bl2112, Brother Nothing, Chickencha, Dave Muscato, davecheng, dcr, Derek_L, Disraeli Gears, Dobodo, Dudaronamous, eraserhead, ForSix, fryBASS, HassBacker, IanStephenson, john turner, JonnyAngle, Kevin Myers, lunker, mrjim123, Munjibunga, nonconformist, P-Bass Fanatic, paganjack, Peck_Time, pendergasta, Phalex, Rathead123, Red Rover, Ricky Daion, Rocinante_x1, Rocker949, serein2j, SMASH, sssmmike, steamthief, Stumbo, Svend-DK, Tired_Thumb, Whisper, Wicked_Bassist7, wodock 47 votes or 75.81%
Dick Cash and the Cadillac Bloodmen b4nny, Bassorama57, bggeezer, chrisisnotevil, Jimbow, Joe.shaffer, K2000, kevinmoore73, kingpin2512, low-endz, metallicafan18, RedCoatMonster, Slax, Taraz, Widdershins 15 votes or 24.19%
Anyway, as I mentioned if Ryan REALLY wants to change it to 'and the Cadillac Bloodmen' so be it. I'll adhere to his decision.
One more thing… I just want to say that I can't stress enough that I don't want to make a big fuss about this. We have a great thing going with this band and I don't want to put it in jeopardy… even in the slightest. For that reason, I really hesitated even sending this email. However, in the end, I thought that a band name change is no small thing and at the very least all the information should be brought to the fore so that a proper decision / discussion can ensue.

Why don't you ask some of the folks who follow your band... the people who actually like that kind of music?
The analogy that somebody made comparing "Dick Cash" to a **classy** name like "Microsoft" (while implying that "Cadillac Bloodmen" was so much less serious than "Dick Cash") was major stretch...

"Does this dress make me look fat?"
"No, not at all, dear."
That kind of thing.
Its easier to get an objective opinion online where fundamentally people REALLY dont care one way or the other as it does not affect them. Of course, you have to take opinions with a grain of salt for sure.

I have over 18,000 posts, and I'm telling you that this "... and the Cadillac Bloodmen" thing is farcial and dorky. So now all's you need to do is relay these facts to your esteemed leader and he will have no options but to capitulate to my strong advice: Don't even think about it.

I appreciate people who are civil, whether they mean it or not. I think: Be civil. Do not cherish your opinion over my feelings. There's a vanity to candor that isn't really worth it. Be kind.

| | | | Name? Just an advice, and only my opinion:
As i'm in the design and advertising business, I deal with (re)naming quite a lot, changing names for large companies and brands (and bands...). Naming is always difficult and very subjective, but over the years i've learned a few things, which take the subjectiveness out of the discussion a bit (IMHO):
- combining ideas (DC + CB) never really works:
it's like saying I like the verse of song A and you like the chorus of song B, well lets glue that together and we'll have a better song, right?....
- shorter is always better: more clear, thus more recognisable, better readable, ownable and memorable
- to change a name you need a cause. Could be a different strategy, target audience, etc. I can't see that's the case with your band.
All of these points can maybe help you in the discussion about names.
--- edit > with all of the above I personally would go with Dick Cash...---
Good luck! |
