My band finally "settled" on a name last night..but the more I think about it this morning, the less I'm liking it.
We settled on Common Tongue. I've asked some opinions of friends/coworkers and it hasn't gone over too well so I thought I'd get some additional feedback from the fine folks here.
Thanks in advance!

| | | | I try and pick names that don't sound like anything to do with the music. My band is RiverGard it will work as a country, rock or blues band and the domain name was available!
I think your name sounds good, the domain isn't available though. |

pink floyd?? the hell?
led zeppelin? weird....
the beatles? just plain corny and unimaginative
these are terrible names... its always been just as bad, but people seem to WORSHIP anything to do with a band they are a fan of (including the name)
SO go crazy and pick a hilariously stupid band name (my last band was named "My Little Pony", and the girls would all yell MLP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and everyone loved it....)
name your band captain planet and the planeteers

I think the name for a new band is the first, although minimal, line of advertising you have, and I have personally checked out bands with witty names just because I liked the name. Put it this way, if my local clubs promoted a new band called The Turd Burglers, I probably wouldn't be to excited about seeing them, and if a name was extremely country band obvious, I'd most likely sit that one out too.
But in the long run, the band however is inevitably the ones who have to live with this name, possibly forever (if recordings are released) and if the name is starting to bother you after just one day, I would consider bringing it up to the rest of the band.
In the 80's I played for a band called Wow/Flutter, and still to this day I dispise that name. |

Currently fronting my band called "duck my sick" - our first EP is called "its a spoonerism" - most people find it quirky and dont normall forget it! |

The Marquee read:
Evil Super Pluto - 7/22

| | | | I was in a band called the Rubber Monkey's, there is a popular local band here call Boloney Ponyz.
Another thought though harder to do is one silable names. Rush, Thrust, Pull... Those are allways good names.
I do like UNcommon Tongue better...
Another local band goes by the World Famous Locals, I always thought that was a clever name.
The Harry Balzacs is another great local band, they are on the sign as HBZ.
Movie quotes are somtimes good
The Last of The V8's

If your a cover or genre band, I think choosing a name that is appropriate to the style of music you play is probably wise from a marketing standpoint. Nobody in their right mind would call their death metal cover band "Fresh MC and DJ shizzle", funny tho it may be.
If your band is originals and/or strives to defy genre, its probably less of an issue. While the music obviously matters most, for the one or two people who might choose to see/pass over a band based on the name, you may wish to pick a name that implies something about how you sound.
My first impression with "Common Tounge" is a hippie jam band or world music ensemble. I'm sure I'm wrong, but there it is! |
