Question Band Setup

Sign in to disble this ad
Do you think a band setup similar to Guns N' Roses (Singer, 2 guitars, bass, drums), or like Green Day (Guitarist sings, bass, drums) better? Me and my cousin are starting up a band and we're still deciding on the setup. I play bass, will never sing, and he plays guitar. Anyways, which setup do you like?

Well... does he sing? That would be the major question. And if so, do you think you need a second guitarist? That enters the musical creativity realm that I can't really answer for you.

I know I prefer 3-pieces or 4-pieces.

Go big. Three guitars (for obligatory guitar war during "Free Bird" - "Green Grass and High Tides" medley), bass, two drummers, horns, strings, synth, a church choir, dancers, magicians, puppets, poets, sign-language interpreters, contortionists, fire-eaters, and a religious specialist of a denomination of your choice. That should get you through the first set.

Fewer people = fewer hassles.

More band members = bigger, potentially better, sound, and usually more problems.

Since you're just starting out, put the word out that you're looking for guitar players, see if you like anyone that responds, and go with the flow...

...Let fate sort it out .

2 guitars.... and have one guitar playing a third or a 5th or something up using a different type chord... sounds awsome.

Less guys= more cash for me.
Money divided 3 ways instead of 4 or 5.

I'm equally fond of both, as Slater pointed out.

I can deal with both, prefer neither.

If I'm with a band that plays songs (rock, pop, etc.) I prefer bass, drums, guitar, vocals. If it's an instrumental thing (standards, jazz fusion, etc.) I'd rather find someone who plays something other than guitar. Two guitarists is way too many - sometimes even one makes too much noise. In the studio you can have as many guitars as you want, and playing live the band would be able to fill out the sound. The only exception is if the singer wants to play on a few, and even then I hate it. It's just too much noise, I like space...

I would rather have one guitarist as it gives the bass player 'more room' in the mix to play more, and cut through. I'm hoping to lose a guitarist at the moment because he hogs all the leads, won't even listen to anything with more of a bassline than a guitarline. plus he turns up ridiculously loud and drowns us all out. He's gonna get the boot soon.

I agree, and that is why I recommended two drummers.

You have 2 and want one gone and we have 2 and want one more. Can we have yours?

If you should go with more than 3 members. Depends on a few factors IMO/IME

1. How good you are as a bassist/how good the other musicians are. (will you be able to hold it all together should the guitarist take a solo in a song)

2. How full you want the music to sound

3. How much money you wanna bring home

Even though my wallet some times hates it, I prefer a minimum of 5 musicians in the band. Singer, Drummer, Bassist, Guitarist, & Keyboardist.
