3 people right now, though we've had four in the past.

Remember, more people = less money.

My two main things now are both with me on tuba - one is a 7 piece dixieland band, the other is a classical brass quintet (that's a 5 piece).

The last bass things I did were a big church orchestra with probably 20-30 people and a rock trio (guitarist/singer, drummer, bass).

More people is not only less money, it's also a lot harder to coordinate everyone's schedules for practice and gigs. But I don't mind it because my current band is completely awesome.

Two quartets (with one looking to go back to five) and a 20+ piece jazz big band at school. I've pretty much concluded that four is my most comfortable size.

For the people in four piece bands, what is the makeup of the band? Two guitar players, guitar and keys, or a lead singer who does not play an instrument?

We went from five to four to three. We're a lot tighter now, the grooves are better, and practical issues like travel and pay make it that much more worth it.

We have 6 all the time, and sometimes the soundman sings with us. So call it 6.3.

I do solo and duo stuff, where I'm on acoustic guitar and vocals.

Then there's the three-piece, in which I play bass and sing.

And finally, I'll be starting up a five piece prog band soon, in which I'll be playing bass.

Went from 5-6 recently with the add on of a female vocalist to the lineup (corporate/wedding/and the occasional club gig). I agree that the less people can be better for pay, but with the addition of a female vocalist we doubled our rep list and now have more appeal to male audiences - which basically means we get better paid and get better gigs so, sometimes the more the merrier!

Oh, and also getting together a jazz trio for restaurant gigs this week.

In my old band we had 6 guys in the band: 2 guitars, bass, singer, drummer, keyboardist. In my new band 5 guys: 2 guitars, bass, vocals, drums. I like the 6 piece better myself because you can have 2 guitarist doing harmonies with each other when the time calls, as well as having a keyboardist/sampler to add a whole new layer to the music.

I prefer to play in trios. That said, I do have a fusion duet coming up soon for my school's christmas performance. I was inspired by the Mclaughlin/Hellborg duet stuff so i thought I'd give it a go!

Currently playing in a four piece: guitar, bass, keys, drums. Last project was a six piece: guitar, bass, keys/organ, drums, tenor and soprano sax. I like the four piece format with either guitar and keys or two guitars.
