Luckily as I live in the UK, I don't have to worry about tipping.

You want a drink? Go to the bar. No waitresses in sight......
I only drink Coca Cola when I'm playing anyway!!!

If he's drinking his bucket and still running up a $40 tab, tell your drummer to get one of these, with a bottle in the car for refills, and to not bother the wait staff.

If he or any band member does that, the band will not likely be playing there again

ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) has VERY stringent regulations about outside alcohol being consumed in bars. Bringing your own, in a flask, can get their liquor license suspended.

I was working as a bouncer, and watched our head bouncer fire a band for this

We have band rules that require the commissioned booking member to verify if we've tipped well enough

I'd pull him aside to have a one on one about how reality works

Yes bartenders and staff have a ton of clout

Honestly, you'd have to be a true idiot to be seen with one of these. The whole purpose of a flask is to drink discreetly.

then you seriously underestimate some bouncers.

In CA you have to have a "guard card", to be a bouncer. Part of the education is in looking for people doing stuff like this.

I have caught a lot of people with outside alcohol, but the real idiots are the ones who think they cannot be caught.
Usually I dump their booze, then send them away

True enough. I lived in Spain for awhile in the 80s. The American inclination to tip is NOT well received everywhere.

I want to live where you live if a $40 is excessive. Here two shots of Patron can make a $40 tab.

Have to agree that you need to take care of the barkeeps and waitstaff. I've seen bands not be asked back because the waitstaff and / or barkeeps complained to venue management about no tips, rudeness, etc.

this is true. In most cases, the employees get to give their opinions in band booking decisions.

I always tip well.....they're just trying to make a living. When I play I take what I would normally tip & double it. They will remember you and in a good way! So the next time I'm there they will look forward to serving you. And I try to remember their name if I can. But what do I know?

Having played in several bands over the years, I know a good rep is important. Show up on time, do your sound checks when they give you the slot, keep your breaks to the time, treat the audience and staff well. You're reputation is only as good as the lowest denominator and I think you know who that person is. Look man, drummers can be replaced. Wait staff are minimum wage earners and depend on tips. It's just crappy that this guy acts like such a jerk. Look him in the eye, give him one final warning and if he continues to do so much as throw a wry comment someone's way, follow through and fire his ass. Sometimes you have to let people learn their lessons on your dime, and let the next band give him another chance at their own risk.

Waiters and waitresses tip the bussers.
Strippers tip the bouncers and the DJs.
Hair stylists tip the shampoo girl.

My band actually made more money from tips than we did from the actual gig we played last night...
