Depends on how long this guy has been playing, how long the rest of the band has been playing (they have been together as a band for five years so they are not beginners!) and whether the stated goal of playing gigs will ever be reached.

If he was a pro player, it wouldn't be out of line to expect him to learn 40 songs in ONE WEEK.

Five months of rehearsals means learning a mere two songs a week...that's only difficult if the material is totally beyond the guy's ability to play. If after all that time he can't even remember KEYS to tunes then it's obvious he's hopeless.

Too bad he has the PA and rehearsal space

There's two things to me that make a good bandmate. Attitude and work ethic. If he's got a great attitude and works hard for you guys then stick with him, it will eventually work out. Get him back to basics laying down the main riffs, he can slowly grow into his Hendrixesque solos. But he must concentrate on whats most important, keep him focused, to me that would be the riffs.

If he's jerk and lazy then move on.
