Bass-sync'ing......should I have done it?

Sign in to disble this ad
My amp was being stupid at a band practice so instead of doing a sensible thing and getting the other amp, I ripped the bassline off a CD and mimed playing to it whilst the bassline played through the PA.

Should I feel guilty? I feel like I've cheated...

I blame it on stupid amps which aren't properly looked after.

Oh come on, even big bands mime playing their instruments on stage.

Doesn't make it any more admirable.

Why didn't you just plug you bass into the PA...and it was just rehearsal, why did you mime it?...who were you trying to fool?...and were they fooled?

If I had done that...I would have gone for a smoke break or something, but alas, I would never do that.

So let's see if I have this right: you had a CD handy that included an isolated bass track, you had the band wait while you ripped the bass track, then you patched your laptop (or whatever) into the PA, hit play, and had the band jump in when they could to play in sync to the track--at which point you mimed along like you were playing?

If your bandmates fell for that, you should stop worrying about whether you unethically tricked them and start worrying about whether they're actually conscious. EMTs might be in order.

I am completely confused by why and how you could find going through all that effort was a better use of time than;

To answer your question - no one can tell you how you should feel, but it seems you already know the answer and that you do feel guilty.

Kudos on having the tech-savvy to be able to pull off such a stunt, though! Extra points for that.

The problem with doing this is you may give your band the
idea you are redundant.

This is what I was thinking. So, the entire band plays along to the bass player in this group, and the band leader waits for your cue to lead?

My guess? You're full of **** and simply want another thread of attention.

I didn't use the PA because there are only 8 feeds and there were no spare ones left.

Also, it was more a dress rehersal for a big church date we've got coming up.

No, what I had was a previous recording of me playing the same song on the PA's main laptop so what I did was feed this through a trigger-board I was using for some backing fills and then waited until the bassline kicks in in the song.

Why the hell you would mime at Practice is beyond me. I'd fire you and urinate on the CD.

I'm only following Mark King's example- there's a L42 clip from French TV where they're clearly miming.

As for getting fired, I'm in a volunteer CHURCH band...NOBODY has been fired from the band in ages simply because we need all the musicians we can get.
