Bridging the Gap?

I've been playing for the past two years now.

I'm having trouble getting the motivation now that I'm out of HighSchool and the band class. It forced me to learn the music and practice.

Now I just doodle around every now and then. I dont consider myself good enough for a real band (it's still rough for me to read music)

I miss having a drummer and someone on the keys to keep me inline. Has anyone else been here?

I was in this alittle while ago. After highschool ended (2 years ago) i stopped playing bass as i was big into jazz band and really involved with it.

I went on a hiatus and finally got a random message from some guy on a local car forum. He wanted to start something up and needed a bassist. I decided it would be something neat and would be fun to get back into so i just grabbed my gear and we jammed.

Who woulda known that it would turn into what it has. We finally picked up a drummer from the same site and a guitarist from a band he played with awhile back.

So far so good- Hopefully will be doing local shows by next month.

I've been where you are. It sucks because you're not very confident about your playing...and you've got no one to play with. But get out and play with some people. There are plenty of people looking for players (classified ads online, local music mags etc.) Once you get to play with some people, you'll find that you aren't inadequate...the percentage of musicians that CAN read music is VERY LOW. At the very least, you can always ride the root note to the drummers rhythem and be fine. Take and chance and have some fun playing music!

if you miss it, you should play. maybe taking lessons would be the way to go. it would be good to make time to practice every day, even if it's just a half hour. It seems that if you don't make some kind of daily commitment you just wind up going weeks without playing.

The more you elevate your skills the better the musicians who will want to play with you. I kind of jumped into a few crappy bands before I could play very well, and although it was fun, I now kind of look at it as a waste of time. In hindsight, I wish I would have just taken lessons and practiced until I was ready to be in a good band.
