Both. We play local bars and clubs and we do small ticketed shows. We're strickly local, older guys not looking to do any more than that. We do it for the fun we have and son't want it to become "work". We do as many as 4 hours and cover the earliest stuff, through rubber soul, revolver, white album, all the way to Let it be (we do a rooftop session) and usually end with the abbey road medley...

And speaking of Elvis, I'd go with the sport coat/penny loafers Elvis over the jumpsuit Elvis. High water pants, slick back hair, and band members are in uniform too. Classic '50s style all the way!

Have to agree with that! Too cool...

You could posssibly put "the music of ABC" after your band name instead of "a tribute to ABC".

It depends on the type of band you are doing the tribute to and how authentic you want to be. If you do not sound like the original artist, costumes are not going to change that. The most important thing is sounding like the artist you are doing.

Same here, though we only have one lead vocalist (rest of us do harmony/backup).

Cool. I've played in a lot of bands over the years but for me, there is NOTHING more fun than playing Bass in a good Beatles band! We're lucky, we found 3 guys who can actually pull off the vocals and harmonies in all original keys. No need for a "lead vocalist". We switch off all night long so at the end of the night, we still have our throats...

We use that alot when putting out ticket forms and flyers for our benefit shows. We'll typically print out posters and order forms with a heading like "(venue) Presents... With a little help from our Friends... An evening of Beatles Music featuring Sexy Sadie band...

If you can pull off the looks OK, but the music should be the main thing.
I caught an Aerosmith tribute out of Boston, damn the singer was a virtual look alike for
Tyler. The rest of the band, eh not so much.
I caught an Allman Brothers tribute, no one looks like the guys but damn they sound really good.

I'm currently playing in a Rolling Stones cover band. We don't refer to ourselves as a tribute band, since we don't attempt to dress and look like the Stones. As someone else suggested above, we bill ourselves as "Gimme Shelter, Performing the Music of The Rolling Stones"

We put the effort in to do the songs faithfully, including using the correct open tunings for signature guitar parts, etc. We've played about 8 local club dates so far and been very well received.

Your probably better off not costuming. I think it's incredibly hard to pull off the Stones look.

Especially with a lead singer who has a shaved head, goatee, and weighs just a BIT more than Mick.

I would think the material is fun to perform.

COULD you be successful and get gigs? Probably. But I would say that if you want to get better gigs, more money in better places, you should be as authentic as possible.

Costumes and show along with the music will get you to the next level. You'll get into the casinos. But hey, if you're happy in the bars, and are too cool for the costumes, more power to you.

Having your tribute band loaded with absolute top notch musicians probably gives you some leeway with not needing to dress up like a clown.

Edit: If you want to see how impressive these guys are, watch their live version of Tomorrow Never Knows. This has got to be one of the most live performance unfriendly songs ever, and these guys pull it off perfectly.

The better tribute bands in Milwaukee (U2 Zoo & The Brittins) are doing 3k shows and up.

Both bands have made huge investments in the best gear, costuming and elaborate sound.

Isn't the difference between "tribute" and "cover" the look?

Not really. Tribute devotes the entire setlist to the artist. Cover plays many different artists' music.
