That's awesome. Did you smash the violin with the bass and then stomp it with your feet while it was on the floor? I still like original version better, though, mainly because of the look Nigel gives the violin before tuning it.
Here's one I'd throw out there. Nicki Minaj's "Beez In The Trap" is very minimal and nearly impossible to play in a way that sounds anything like the original. So, we play it using motifs from another track that's all electronics, but more low-tech and easier to imitate on real instruments, that track being Buraka Som Sistema's "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)" which is also probably the #1 crowd favorite with my other band.
Here are the links so you can judge, with NSFW lyrics.
The spin I'm probably happiest with and most proud of, though, is a lyrical one, in Gusttavo Lima's "Balada Boa" changing the lyrics from meaning "Gusttavo Lima and you" to "Adriana Lima and you". No-brainer. Almost makes up for us not having the accordions to play it properly.
I wonder if BassAgent has ever played that one, I think it was a #1 hit in the Netherlands last year?

Sorry no recordings, we did a righteous Smoke on the Water back in the day. Also a rocking version of the DJ hit "Funk Soul Brother" from Fatboy Slim. Both were better than the original radio versions if you asked me.

Disqualified because even a crashing truck loaded with silverware is going to kill with a smokin' hot, dancing singerbabe in a sparkly dress!!

Big +1
What famous artist is going to cover a song like their predecessor?? What would be the point?
This is a discussion about bar bands playing covers.
I haven't seen anything that urges me to not play to the record....
OK, we're not a cover band, but we've done tons of covers. A bunch of samples below. Some are closer to the originals than others. More where that came from on our youtube channel. Enjoy!
Thanks, man! I realize my playing on that track is crap - it was live, and I'm fairly sure this was my first gig with the band. We were all sort of 'working out the kinks' then and there....

Please keep in mind, I am playing in the Classic Rock genre, and there is probably no harder genre to get something by the audience. And no fair, those of you who are listing famous original artists who covered something.
The point is, cover bands that either "improve" or "put a fresh spin" on a well-known song. So far, I think we have two examples of doing just that.
Anyone else?
To be honest, I don't think I can provide one. We pretty much play the songs in the vein of the original artist, or we're doing a cover of a cover. I'll let you know if I come up with something.
YOu are right, lets see a Cover Band making a"skynyrd" song there own, or how about Rage Against the MAchine tune, most of these songs so far, I barely have even heard the originals. Slow jazz/blues stuff, like Don't Know Why doesn't count, the audience could care less if you play that like the original.
These are great, plus they're more or less what I'd love to do with the originals that I play, if only the people who wrote them would let me...

My volume pedal swells in the intro, and out of the bridge are tough to hear, in this mix, as I was still playing mostly passive instruments, for "lite" gigs, at the time. The overall package is probably the best recording ever of our erstwhile violinist singerbabe. This is the first time that this has ever been shared, in public. She really brings out the pathos.
My band does something towards the "our spin" side of things I suppose. We're a wedding band, and we saw the same thing time and time again. These local "party bands" doing nothing but looping samples and playing along to the pre recorded synth tracks to give it the "authentic album sound" live. Its actually incredibly boring, and fake sounding. Instead, we play the same songs, and rock them the eff out. Our keyboard player mixes synth with a jazzy Stevie type tone, and our sax player doubles the synth with effects (octaves, distortions, synths). I lay on some fuzz, our drummer hits hard, and while my guitar player shreds, our 2-3 singers are out in the crowd, surfing or getting a huge dance circle going. If you want to hear the actual song, hire a DJ. If you want a high energy rock "spin", hire us. And they do! 100-150 weddings a year, 3 years straight. Most booked band in the company!
Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to post the videos They're for client use and viewing only. I didn't pay for it to be done, so it's not mine. But its cool! Filmed at Gustavino's NYC.
